Hi Andy, I think you would have to mod the undertray if you use that shock. I did research it as much as I could, and the Cbr600rr shock is ideal due to it's length and relative ease of fitting. Literally just drill a slightly bigger hole in the fork fitting and buy some washers to shim the top fitting. R6 shocks are shorter so need something doing with the dogbones if you want to maintain ride height. I think the Cbr1000rr shock can be used too, but don't quote me on that, and the reservoir on that sticks straight out and up at an angle, so looks a bit different. I have had interest in the Vapor dash, and I will sell it when I get round to disconnecting all the wiring.. If the other fella doesn't want it I'll let you know. Don't worry about using others ideas, that's what the forum is for, plus they are not my ideas anyway !! I did wonder if the shock was going to fit though, and I wasn't sure it would until today. Whilst I was fitting the shock, I had a look at the left side frame spar where the side stand mounts, and whether the Tsa pipe would fit. The side stand area sits a bit lower on that side, so even with the stand removed I don't think the pipe would fit, plus the stand would have nowhere to mount to. May give Mark Dent a call tomorrow and ask about pipes. Still a long way off but would be nice to get some info. If I do, I'll let you know. Regards Dusty

Great project well done, looking good fitted one of those CBR600 shocks to mine & it works really well. IMHO I would ditch the standard seat unit & sub frame as they look old & dated whereas the rest of it looks very modern. The Ducati seat unit looks far better but I'm bias as I fitted then to my previous two builds. BTW the Cagiva Mito has basically the same seat unit as the Ducati & there are loads of cheap Mito sub-frames about.

Hi Nik, Been following your Kh build matey, and it's gorgeous, my kind of bike definitely. The Tzr really was in a bit of a state cosmetically when I got it, and as nice as the 916 seat is, it didn't look right on this bike. I have kept the subframe though, as it could be modded for a different seat at a later date. I've had race seats before (400e) and although it looked great it was really uncomfortable (painfull) to ride any distance, plus the fibreglass didn't cope well with potholed roads. I really want to get it sorted as standardish, and then ,maybe ,play around with seats at a later date. I did have an idea of something like this; Bit different !! Dusty

Regards Dusty When I've made enquiries about the pipes before I've been told that GP style pipes would be harder due to the shock linkaged hanging low and getting in the way. I hope thats not the case as personally I'd love to have 2 on one side but was going to settle for 1 either side. I've found a guy down in devon/cornwall way who I may well go to. I wanted to go TSA but the price difference was a fair amount and i also have somewhere to stay not far from this guy down in devon. I'm still undecided and along way off so we'll see how things go. Yeah let me know about the stealth as and when you can. I'm certainly in no hurry.

Morning Andy, The suspension linkage does hang low; But the few Tzr's I've seen with the ypvs engine fitted often have Gp style pipes; If you notice, this bike has had the suspension modified so that it works a bit like the Lc set up. Don't know if that's due to the original linkage getting in the way. It can be done though, and Kenny has done these; You can see that it's a bit of a job getting round the linkage. The difficulty is making the pipe work as it should whilst being the right shape to get around the obstacles. Obviously, as standard, this frame was designed for reverse cylinder pipes, and a single pipe when used for the 125, so fitting 2 low pipes was never in the design ! Dusty

Hi, Constant rain here means a bit more shed time The pipe issue means that I cant strip the Tzr down completely, so I'm spending time seeing what needs to be changed, what's serviceable, what would be powdercoated, polished or just cleaned etc. The Tzr tank has two petrol outlets, one at the top underside and one at the bottom. Where the tap has been fixed by the previous owner means it is about level with the carbs, which isn't ideal, so I need to either resite it or get a different tap plumbed in line; All looked a bit messy, so I removed the tap and remounted the brake reservoir; Looks a bit neater already, although I will shorten the hose and mount it on the lower lug you can see in the pic. Not sure what the footrest hangers are off but they are not standard 4dl 125; On one side the heel plate has had holes drilled, the other has slots. I will need to get both sides matching so I am considering getting them milled out so both have the same large hole in the middle. I will polish the mounts which should look good against a satin black frame. Also took off the Vapor unit and headlights. Lot of engineering in this mount; Shame not to use it. There are rubber inserts in all the joints and it's really strong. The new speedo will mount on the bars and the lights will mount differently too. I quite like the idea of mounting the lights one above the other, with the lower light further forward than the top light. I think there is a Sachs motorbike with lights like that. Something to mull over Dusty

Hi Paul, Thanks for the info regards the footrests. Had a quick look on ebay, and I think you are right about them being R1. How is your Tzr coming on ? What are you doing about pipes ?

If memory serves me right it should have the model code on the underside of the footrests , might have 4xv or 5jj on there somewhere. The Tzr is coming on a bit ( very ) slowly Just trying to save up for the bits I need for the engine at the moment , I'm going to get Kenny to make the exhausts for it as he knows his stuff when it comes to rd's

Hi, Kenny is the man when it comes to pipes for sure. They would certainly be my first choice. Today, with a bit more time in the shed, I decided to get a bit medieval with Betty; Decided to get the anodised gold finish off the forks. It wasn't a particularly thick coating but it covered a very fine grooved finish; Getting the anodising off meant the grooved finish being "flatted" too, so it was a fair amount of work - 3 hours for 1 leg with a sander, sanding block and lots of elbow grease; This leg is now ready for polishing, once I get some new mops. Then I'll respray the bottom of the fork silver, then summon up the courage for the other leg ! Dusty

Hammering down with rain this morning so I thought I'd finish the fork legs and polish them. Not a job I'd care to do again in a hurry; Came up pretty well. Not sure whether to paint or polish the fork lowers now. I'll let my finger tips recover first !! Dusty

Wow! That must have taken some effort! Could paint the lowers in the same colour as wheel/ caliper colours. I'm thinking about getting my entire forks wheels and calipers done in black now. As with the swing arm.

Hi, Rain again this afternoon, so I decided to polish the fork lowers. Only done 1 so far and it took ages as it's quite a fiddly casting to get the mops around. Pics will follow. I had thought about spraying the lowers but thought they may chip easily due to where they are located. Didn't want to polish them to the same degree as the uppers though and it's a slightly rougher casting anyway, but happy with the result.

Cheers for the comments guys. Forks are done for now and back on the bike so I can move it around; When the rebuild starts properly, they will get another going over but the hard work is done. It was a bit epic to be honest, and would have been a lot easier if it wasn't for the "milled" finish under the anodising that needed flatting. The fact that I haven't stripped this down completely means I tend to stand and stare at it for ages thinking what direction I will take with it. I like the idea of flatter bars, with the Acewell mounted centrally on them. I still like the idea of using the twin headlights , but one above the other, with the lower light mounted further forward than the top, to look like this; I want to mount the lights to the forks though, so will need to make 2 plates the lights can fix to, and find suitable fork brackets. The muddie needs rubbing down and respraying with the correct red to match the tank. As it's the only paintwork I'll need to do, it will be a rattle can job. Would have gone to Halfords already, but the store in Staines is under lots of water !! I need to leave a rolling chassis with the engine in for when I eventually get the pipes sorted, but I have decided to remove everything else and start to clean and renovate as much as I can. The right footrest hanger will see the polishing wheel; The brake cylinder leaks so will need rebuilding and I want to get the heel plate milled out to get rid of the slots. Lots of bits to do then !! Dusty

Also, a long time into the future, I plan to spray the original red tank a different colour, and use the original subframe that came on the bike, to mount a really minimalist race style seat, so I can change the look of the bike completely just by swapping bodywork. Something like the silver bike at the top of this page. Dusty

Took a couple of parts off today. Footrests looked standard R1 at first, but closer examination shows they have had some work to make them fit; I'm sure they'll polish up ok. These are the next bits to get some attention; More soon. Dusty

Hi, Things will start to slow down with this build now. The fact that it will need bespoke pipes building is stopping me from stripping it completely. The rearsets are off and when I get time I will polish them up a bit. I did drop the seat sub frame off to Microblast today though; Once that gets sorted, I will bolt the plastic undertray to it and also the red/wite side panels and store it away for later. Also need to match the red paint for the mudguard, which has been poorly resprayed with a darker shade red than standard. More soon. Dusty

Hi, The subframe is looking a bit better now; It was really rough before powdercoating, and I chose gloss rather than satin in the end as it isn't a high gloss finish. I had already cleaned up the underseat box, and some new stainless bolts and washers saw it bolted back onto the subframe; Time to trial fit the side panels. I had cut off the broken part of the left side and cleaned them up a bit; I need to sort the red speed blocks on the side panels. Either new decals or mask them up and spray the red part. I will get some new vinyl too and recover the seat pads. Dusty
