Finally getting around to painting the 1990 F2 I bought for my wife several months ago. This is what it looked like when we brought it home. She kept complaining that everyone fawned all over my LC and nobody payed a second look at her RZ. I spent days sanding all the panels and fixed prob 3 dozen various cracks, splits and broken tabs. Everytime I turned around a new crack would appear. I'm surprised the bodywork even hung on the bike in the first place. The front fender had at least seven different paint colours on it and the bondo was an eighth of an inch thick in some places. My father-in-law has a fair bit of bodywork experience so we press-ganged him into doing the paint when they came to visit. Paint is coming along nicely but is a ton more work than I expected. Spent an hour and a half just lining up the tank decals tonight. The father-in-law lining up the tape for the red top of the tank. I am liking the red/white combination with black wheels. I think it looks a lot better than the original red wheels.

A little bit more progress today. All the parts are now painted. There is still some minor sanding and polishing going on. The next step is decals. It is starting to look like an RZ again. I had the seat recovered and it looks fantastic.

It was a long day and everyone helped out to get the RZ finished. It is 1000x better than the old rattlecan blue even if there are a few flaws. Turns out afew of the decals are a downright son of a bastage to apply. Getting a large decal to fit a compound curve is a serious headache and we had a few hairy moments but in the end everything went on ..... with a few small wrinkles. For some reason the Stormy Red paint we got doesn't really match the deeper red of the decal set which is a bit disappointing. However I have to remind myself this is a ca $2000 motorcycle and the entire paintjob including decals cost less than $300. This little project has given me new respect for custom paint jobs. By the end I wanted to stab myself in the eye with a fork. I still need to tweak the front fairing mount back into shape a bit and spend some time on getting the rust out of the tank but she will be ready to roll for next weekend.

A couple of pics from this morning in the bright sunlight. One dissappointment is that the red turned out quite orange. I think the problem is related to the yellow primer we used. A red tinted primer would have worked better. Oh well, live and learn. Regardless it looks tons better than before.

That looks a fantastic improvement, couldn't the inlaw advise on the correct undercoat? or was it done before he was press-ganged in to help I've just been doing some bodywork and also realise what hard work it is to get things repaired and looking 'invisible' after you throw a bit of paint at it. Thought it was going to be soooo easy

Excellent job mate. Its not easy- it took my painter 3 attempts getting graphics made to original spec. Do you have a fleck in the red? Cheers Nick.
