to see how the HD mini-cam I bought worked when velcro'd to the side of my lid...
Dont know if the quality really shows on youtube, but the original is quite impressive for a £30 camera.
I bought the wide-angle (120 degree fov) version - Im going to get the 80 degree FOV one as well, as it will fisheye the video less.
it was held to the side of my helmet by small sticky velcro pads (and a safety string cos I dont really trust them)
the results are surprisingly good.

the narrowness is down to me having rotated the camera through 90 degrees when I stuck it to the helmet.
Im going to make a wee bracket that attaches to the visor pivot that will turn the camera back through 90 degrees again.
I think Im having this issue because I bought the 120degree FOV version that has this wide format - the 80 degree one should be a lot better and may give an ok picture attached like this one was.
I'll try to take a video from the same camera mounted flat and let you see the difference.
