Visited Gary today to have my new oil pump given the once over...you may have seen my post about my oil pump seemingly losing oil from the central shaft, the pump was brand new, in the bag, from Yam, was a few weeks old and had covered 60 miles, id looked at everything around the pump in an attempt to cure the leak, not expecting the only brand new Gen Yam part on the bike could be at fault.
Flitwick Yamaha wanted me to return it, then it be sent away for inspection and some weeks later, I may or may not have received a replacement pump.
I was slightly apprehensive about Gary taking it apart, fearing if there was a manufacturing defect , Yamaha would notice the pump had been apart , which would have been £150 down the swannie, plus the 300+ mile round trip from my gaff to his ..but the lure of having it fixed was too strong and his reputation on the forum sealed the deal
What we found was an eye opener for us both.
The seal (on what I call the plunger) was simply miles too big to work, even a 30 year old seal of an old pump fitted the shaft perfectly!
Some how in Yamaha, the wrong size seal was fitted upon assembly..its clear from the pictures, no wonder the pump leaked oil!
What I can say from watching Gary work is the guy is a perfectionist, I wont give away any trade secrets but he has a selection of bespoke tools to work his magic on these things and his attention to detail, for me, was just fantastic, had a had prior knowledge of the issues with these pumps and the work Gary can do, i would have had my old pump done whilst the engine was apart in 2012..
To top the day off, I only actually managed to fit the pump back on myself, even priming the oil lines with a syringe, like the pro I now am..last job was to adjust it all up and jobs a good un. Now I can ride it!
