Got it sorted and in the end it was a fairly painless experience.
I had a bit of trouble getting the MOT done, he failed it on the brakes, personally I think he was being harsh, but I suppose its his neck on the line if it kills me and he MOT'd it. So I stripped them down, cleaned the pistons and seals, sorted it all out and then he passed it.
Sorted my insurance and then on to the DVLA......
I wanted to be sure I had everything I needed before I set off, so I phoned Swansea to ask advice. I got some proper snotty woman who was extremely rude, told me I was wasting my time going to the local office because they'd simply turn me away.
I was supposed to wait 10 days for them to post me a V55/5 then write to Swansea and then wait a few weeks......etc etc
I started to say I'd rather go into a local office and she gave me an ear bashing along the lines of "Are you listening or what? I just told you to post it, thats your only option, DO NOT go to the local office and don't waste any more of my time".
I said thanks and hung up.
Phoned back 30 seconds later and I got a lovely Welsh lady who explained it all very carefully, checked I'd got the right documents and advised that while they would take the application at my local office they had been advised to steer people to do a postal application. I said I'd rather go to the office and see someone in person and she said fine, it was my choice.
An absolutely lovely woman, very helpful.
Went to the local office, the lad on reception was a star, he checked my documents and directed me over to a lady on another desk who double checked all my documents, took them into the back and then came back saying they were all fine except I'd missed putting the date of first registration on the V55/5.
I sorted that and she gave me a number and said they'd call me to a desk.
Exactly 6 minutes later my number came up, I gave another nice lady all my documents, paid the fee and 4 minutes later I'm walking out of the door with a receipt.
Apparantly it takes two days to process then they'll deal with it and send a letter out on the third day, so expect something Thursday at the latest.
The staff at the local Preston office were brilliant, it was a pleasure going in. Its a crying shame they're closing it because the future looks bleak if you get a 50/50 response like I did from Swansea.
So fingers crossed there is no hiccup with the paperwork and it all sails through. I only had to put a bare minimum about the bike on the V55/5.
The nice lady in Swansea gave me a list to make sure I had....
My German log book
The NOVA form
My MOT
V55/5 - you can collect one and fill it in at the local office
My Insurance
ID, something like a passport
ID, something with my address on
The fees
