Is it worth buying a bike with the engine number re-stamped so it matches the frame number. Are you aloud to do this or is it dodgy.

One of my bikes is like that - I don't see the problem personally.
Just ensure you don't pay any matching number premium, then buy it, ride it & enjoy it.

And hope you aren't stopped and checked by a transport cop. (not much chance of that though as there aren't many left.)

And hope you aren't stopped and checked by a transport cop. (not much chance of that though as there aren't many left.) Why? Engine numbers aren't a legal requirement. You can stamp whatever you like on there. Quite legal to have nothing at all, like my FZR250 - bikes under 250 have no numbers in Japan. So long as you don't try & pass it off as original, what's the problem? It'll ride the same, regardless of what's stamped on the cases.

A re-stamped number is a stolen engine - and therefore a stolen bike - in my eyes. Stolen from someone like us and probably still terribly missed.

My engine was restamped by the previous owner cos he couldn't be bothered to change the log book. I saw the doner bike - or are you suggesting he stole that as well? He probably thought it would improve the value, but he didn't do a good enough job.

Is this the blue and white one on ebay in Bolton?
I emailed the seller before I bought mine and he seemed genuine, the previous owner had done it. Chances are it was a misguided attempt by someone to try and increase its value by having matching numbers.
Personally though I'd tend to steer clear, maybe its genuine, maybe its nicked. I'd rather have unmolested unmatching numbers.

'In my eyes' means my opinion, so I don't need proof ;D I wouldn't buy it but lots of people think it is okay to do so. Changing the number on the registration document is far easier than re-stamping the case, so the 'couldn't be bothered' story seems slightly strange too!

Restamped engine cases or blank cases used to mean stolen engine. People may re stamp to try and increase the value, still arguably a fraud offence.

Its illegal. The number is stated on the V5t and if its tampered its illegal. No number at all is fine and on the V5 it will say "not stated" Personally I would not touch it unless its cheap, you could pick up a set of case cheap and send the v5 off to change the numbers but the price needs to reflect this.

The black 350LC in my avatar pic had a 4L1 bottom end when I bought it. I picked up a pair of 4L0 cases on eBay for £55 and swapped everything over to them before selling the bike, which meant it was worth more than it was with the 250 bottom end but less than it would be with matching numbers. Wouldn't have dreamed of just stamping the 4L1 cases to match the 4L0 frame number .. I'm sure that would be illegal.
