OK, so I have fitted an RD 250/400 (DX?) oil tank to my bike c/w sender/dipstick & integrated wiring. My question to all you 'windies' is what purpose does the wiring serve? Is it purely for a low warning light or is a 'gauge' of some sort utilised? The wiring has three cables, although I can't remember the colours!

It's just a low level light that comes on at any time when there is approx 500ml left in the tank. It also comes on when the bike is in neutral (hence the extra wires) as a means of checking the bulb.

Good on ya folks.
Have tinkered this evening & found a way of wiring two of the three wires to incorperate a low level warning light!
Result!
