It's that Silkolene Light Gear Oil everyone keeps talking about, and it is wet clutch sped..
I didn't have any slippage problems on my 150km ride, and I was riding like a hooligan (just not the first 10km since I was stuck in rush hour traffic). The fiber disks measures at "new" spec (3mm IIRC) and the steel disks look to be flat. So I don't quite understand why it would slip, unless the springs have gone soft since 1983
Anyway since it doesn't seem to be a problem once the engine is really warmed up then I'll not bother doing anything else about that.
Now what I should do is something with my soft forks. I think I'll try the old "cut the springs 40mm and add a spacer" first, and if that still sucks I'll try some different springs.
And I should test the chineese vForce4 copies I have.
And I should give those large can Microns one more try.
And polish my paintjob but no one notices that if you go fast enough

Did you have to remove from handlebar and fully drain down the brake fluid, or was you able to do it whilst fitted and just lowering the fluid level?

Today, on Project Kevin, I... Painted the top end Started the teardown of an engine untouched by human hands for 20+ years, and was dismayed by the condition of the clutch plates ... so ordered some new ones, along with a wallet busting selection of other new parts which I have on the list. and started the refurb of one of my old tanks to see if it can be reclaimed. Today we have filled it with caustic soda. No leaks so far

Fitted a 17t front sprocket. When the barrels came back from re linering I dropped the front from 16 to 15 and up a tooth on rear, to try and get it to pull through the midrange. After Richard Slinn ( trick tuning ) sorted the transfers out it was way under geared on this, back to 16 tooth front , revved out in top easily. With 17 tooth on pulls top gear no problem down local bypass.( running a 110/90 rear tyre )

Took deliver, in person, of a pattern centre stand from Ken. Very nice bloke, he was telling me that he may not be getting anymore made as the company that made them recon they underquoted. May only be worth it for a big order.

Today I put the cylinder head back together I cleaned out the crankcases, cleaned and inspected the gearbox and reinstalled it... ...and was going to put the crank back in and close up the cases. I had high hopes that the crankshaft, even after 25 years of neglect, would be OK to reuse. It "felt" OK when I span it up in the cases, it looked OK(ish) when I took it out, but after cleaning the dried up oil and clag from the bearings and giving it a paraffin bath, it's clear that at least 3 of the mains are FUBAR, and I now have doubts about the integrity of the crankpins. I'm going to need a new crankshaft. Yes. that's the colour of the paraffin bath after I washed the bearings out.

Very good indeed, what kit are you using. Tempted to learn myself at 55 ๐ฎ Its just an old Clarke 140 MIG using Argonshield gas First one looked good but had to move quite quickly and it was a bit spattery I remember a mate who is a good welder saying it should sound like sizzling bacon when set right so dropped the current to no.2 and the wire speed to just above 1. Also upped the gas a bit Then it was very clean and all the flying spatter stopped At first through the mask it was just flashing bright orange. After adjusting everything it's a very bright white Those auto dimming masks are great After welding up the slots I was going round cut tube ends building up weld just to get used to it Then found some 3mm metal plate with holes in it so went about filling the holes in Quite happy with my amateur attempts Got tie bar brackets and a centre stand section to weld into an LC frame. Only intended to tack them then get a mate to weld them up but may give it a go myself now Steve

Picked up this old Gixxer 11 K, Gone to far to restore, too much corrosion, So I'm turning it into a fighter, Stock engine, 38mm Mikuni RS38s with stacks, Two brothers pipe, Gixxer 11 M front suspension and rear wheel, BMW S1000RR rear shock, staright bars, single headligh, powdercoated all the metals, painted the endine and Ti bolts and stainless bolts on the covers, Venhill lines, bunch of other minor goodies, Not going to crazy on it... Should be a good laugh, The 1127 engine was one of the best engines out there,

( good job it was cheap )

Excellent, that's the kind of advise I need. Thanks ๐ I zoomed in on the pic and I can see what you mean That was literally the first attempt. Had to go quite quick so knew something wasn't quite right The next few seemed to sit on the joint if you know what I mean so guessed there wasn't enough heat penetration When I tried higher current the weld had bubbles in it so guessed that wasn't the right way to go Someone had mentioned circles or side to side so noted now Slowing the wire helped a lot I'll continue to play over the weekend ๐ Steve

Bubbles in your weld is contamination or oxygen, this happens when you weld tube and don't purge with Argon/Co2 or your gas is too high pulling oxygen in with the flow across the tip, 6 - 7 Lph is a good ball park for mig welding most jobs up to 10 mm thick.

What distance should you be holding the tip from the weld?
