Hi Picked up another Lc Hybrid last night, local to me in Eton. I saw it advertised in the back of Practical Sportsbike and went and had a look. This is the only pic at the moment, until it stops raining !!; It's a 4Lo frame with a 31k powervalve engine fitted, 31k carbs, K&n filters and I think, Stan Stephens pipes. Front brake is Ap disc, caliper and master cylinder. There is a pro am fairing fitted and also a belly pan that has not been fitted. I have got lots of receipts going back to 1984. Dream Machine did the paintjob, which needs re doing due to chips and scratches. The seat has been recovered. When the engine was fitted, PDQ in Taplow fitted and wired in some Ypvs clocks, and switchgear is Ypvs. Turns out the owner prior to the guy I bought it from lived just round the corner from me when he had the bike back in the 80's, as I found a dated receipt with his name and adress on it ! The guy I bought it from has owned it ten years and ridden it twice - to and from PDQ to get the carbs set up. He then put it in his garage with the intention of doing track days but that never happened. Only bug for me is the fact it's on a "Q" plate. The old V5 has the 4LO frame number and Ypvs engine number on it but states 1984 as the year it was new Dvla have said get a dating certificate from Yamaha to start the ball rolling, and I've spoken to Yamaha and they provide a service where they will provide a letter stating year of manufacture based on a frame number, so that's where I'll start. I originally bought it for either parts to finish mine or to sell on, but I think I'll keep it and just ride it. Ideally I will use the 31k carbs on my other Hybrid, and fit an airbox to this one and use the powerjets which should be easier to set up with an airbox. The Gsx will have to go unfortunately, both to pay for this one and make room in my small garage. That should leave me with some money over for parts though so not all bad. I'll post loads of pics when I get her out into daylight. Dusty

Hi, I never normally get lucky with bikes price wise. Funny thing is I didn't even have to knock him down. It was up for £1200.00 ono and I said what did he think it was worth. He said he wouldn't accept less than a grand, so that's what I offered and he accepted straight away. I was keen to get it home before the mag came out on general sale though Dusty

Hi, Bit of an update on this one. Haven't touched it since I got it last November , but got it out of the garage today to remove the rearsets, and I thought I would have a go at starting it. The battery is ancient but took a charge so that was good. New BR8ES's were fitted and some fresh fuel in the tank. No amount of kicking over would see it fire up so I delved a bit deeper. Had a look at the wiring from the Cdi as I found I had no spark when I removed the plugs. Found a red wire with green tracer had come adrift, so remade the connection and now there is a spark, albeit weak. Still doesn't want to fire up though, so next thing will be carbs off and put through the ultrasonic cleaner. Plugs weren't very wet, so I wonder if the pilots are a bit blocked. The tops of the pistons, when viewed through the plug holes, look completely free of carbon, so that could be good news, and there seems to be good compression. Dont intend to run it for long, just want to prove it can run before I relegate it to the bottom of the rebuild list I have bought an original airbox for it which I intend to use with the SS pipes, plus I got some standard Lc footrest hangers and rider and pillion pegs, Lc brake pedal and gear change, plus I swapped the front brake disc for a standard twin disc set up with plates for the AP lockheed caliper, so I'll need another caliper to complete the twin disc set up. I also got some LC clocks, which are Kmh, but I also got some Xs650 clocks which are Mph, so I intend to rebuild them and fit those instead of the Ypvs clocks. I am going back to standardish with this one which is unlike me ;D. Also need to ,hopefully, get an age related number for it as I dont want it to stay as a "Q" plate. More soon Dusty

So I whipped the carbs off this morning and stripped them down to put in the ultrasonic cleaner. Pretty clean on the inside but a bit grubby on the outside. Ledar nozzles are fitted and the jets look pretty big . When I took the slides out to remove the carbs, I noticed the slide on the choke side was in the fully open position. The cable had come adrift from the cable junction under the tank, not helped by a badly placed cable tie. So I sorted that and put the carbs through a half hour cleaning cycle each. Put the carbs back on, and third kick - success, she fired up and ran as sweet as anything. No nasty rattles or noises, revs nice and cleanly and pulls away in first gear. Tacho doesn't appear to work but I'm going back to a cable/Lc tacho anyway.Pipes sound quite tinny, certainly not as noisy as I thought they may be, but then I was really frugal with the revs as she hasn't run in such a long time. To say I am pleased is a huge understatement ;D ;D. Now, do I do the right thing and strip her down to check everything or do I get a couple of jobs done and get her MOT'd ?? Regards Dusty

MOT her and use her for the summer gets my vote.
Once you use her for a bit, it will probably show up some other jobs you will want to do anyway.
Good luck

Got the KR out today and got her running so I could check the oil pump was working. All seems good. I am seriously considering getting an MOT and using her for the summer. Will need to go over everything first though. Left side pipe smokes more than the right, but not excessively. I fitted the set of kmh clocks I had earmarked for the Yamasaki; When I took the headlight lens off, I was confronted with lots of aftermarket bullet connectors. The Lc clock has all its plugs intact, so I robbed an old knacked Lc loom of it's connectors; I will add some new bullets to the end of these so I don't have to cut the clock loom at all. Would be nice to have her on the road this summer ! Dusty

Been going through this bike a bit more today. One thing I noticed early on was the fact the powervalves didn't cycle when the ignition was switched on. It made 3 little chirps like it was trying to work. The servo motor is cable tied under the ignition coil, so I cut the ties and pulled the motor out for a better look.. It was quickly apparent that the cables were so tight the motor couldn't rotate. When I removed the cables, the motor spun through nearly 360 degrees. It will only spin one way though, so no matter how I adjust the cables, they always end up pulling too tight. Looks like the servo could be knacked, so will try the servo off my F2 to see if that's any better. Also found that the loom appears to be from a 31k. Need to marry the Lc clock wiring into the 31k wiring. Rear stop light doesn't work either, so looks like I'm gonna be studying my wiring diagrams again !!

I think you have the clocks mounted above the top yoke instead of below..... They will sit a lot better lower down. :-)

I agree with 4l04ever they do tend to look better below the yoke

Hi, Well spotted!! The clocks are mounted on top of the yoke stubs. I prefer them a bit more upright, and the cables still reach which makes it do-able. The clocks on my other hybrid are mounted in the same way.

One step forward, two back ! I investigated the servo motor issue tonight. I swapped the motor over from my F2, and it did exactly the same thing, just spun in the same direction rather than forwards then back. So, guessing it must be the pv controller, I temporarily wired in a spare and , bingo, a motor that spins forward and back again. So I reconnected the cables and adjusted them up and they work as they should. Then I had a look at the non functioning rear stop light. That was an easy fix as I found the spring from the stop switch had come adrift from the pedal, so reconnected it and that works ok. Thought I would fire her up and let her tick over, but didn't want to start. Pulled a plug out and there is no spark. When I did the wiring for the controller, I had the battery holder off so I could get to the wiring, so I may have dislodged something. The wiring on this bike looks to be a nightmare, with bodges everywhere. Looks like I'm back to square one again !!

Hi, I am amazed that it started up as easily as it did to be honest. My projects are nearly always non runners when I get them and stay that way for a long time !! Spent some more time this evening trying to sort the lack of spark, but still no luck. Here is a taste of what I am up against; Got fed up with it in the end so it's back in the garage and the battery will go back onto the other Hybrid Lc. Dusty
