I have the 31k in a semi state of stripped and have repaired the leaking fuel tap I had but on closer inspection the tank needs a bloody good clean inside. I've removed most of the rusty crap deposits with a magnet but I think it needs to properly cleaned out. Do those on the forum with the experience know where or who can do this? There are no holes in the tank but I think it needs to be done right before I refit the tank and start to use the bike again. Thank you.

a lot of people clean the inside of the tank with white vinegar, have a go with that and then you can assess the situation again

The vinegar is an option but will thin all the metal so you have to be careful you don't over do it.
Other option is reverse osmosis with a battery charger and an old nail to remove the rust.
Have not used the above options but have used the first 2 stages of a POR 15 kit. Marine clean to get the varnished fuel and any gunk out then Metal Ready to neutralise and convert rust.

Has anyone ever used a specialist to clean out a tank? As they are very rare the last thing I want to do is attempt doing it myself and buggering it up.

They do seem to be rare but strangely over the last few months there has been half a dozen really good ones on ebay that have been rust and dent free. I know cause I bought one of them, expect to pay £150 - £200 but if you consider the companies that treat them and line them charge £100 - £180 it may be worth hanging out for one then selling yours on the bay to claw back some money. If you are trying to it without re painting then good luck as a lot of the treatment chems will damage paint so be careful. Steve

Bike will be fully repsprayed once it's rebuilt so I'm not too worried about the outside I just don't trust myself to do the insides without making it worse than it is. The last ones I've seen are either bodged or have more holes than the England defence!!
