In this months edition they have a nice article on the F2 and have it against the Honda VF500F2. ITs about how Honda tried tempt us off the 'stink-wheels' (their words) onto diesels. Anyway its a good article and worth reading Stephen

bit harsh on the 350 though, wannit? Jeez, I remember absolutely gagging for a powervalve back then... but I ended up going from my 250lc to a VF400 and I was a bit disappointed. Maybe the 500 is alot better.

Maybe the 500 is alot better. yep agree read the full artical after post and though what the F...... Not read about the VF500 yet. Most of us at the time also did not have the standard set up. Even my YPVS had exhaust change, drilled airbox etc did not care like I do today. I went out for a 350 and ended up with a GPZ305!! now talk about disapointment............That soon went and got a ported 350LC which I always wondered why I did not get one in the first place. (until the crank twisted at 90mph on a bend two up!) Really nothing compaired at the mid level to the LC's/YPVS in 4 stroke range. Only when I got into the VRF750's range etc that you sort of got the same thrill.

I thought it was a great article, and whilst I agree, it was a little harsh on the Power Valve, the VF500 was a great bike also (and I say this with a 31k sitting in the garage) I've always maintained though that riding a 2 strokes offers a very different experience to riding a four stroke, it just depends what you want in a bike. So.... anyone got a nice VF500 they want to off load cheap Patrick

I've read the article and agree with what is written, but the comparision is unfair. Mate of mine has a VF500, the American model without the full fairing It really is a nice bike, good build quality and quick, but of no interest if your into 2strokes.

I havent read the article but back in the day, my best mate had a VF500 and I a NS400, they NS was much quicker accleration wise while the VF maybe was a mph or 2 quicker at the top end, the NS like the VF was a fine handling bike thou, certainly both a lot better than a F2 valve.
Id still like a good example of any of them, will get a copy of the mag today.

hi guys well i have both bikes (ypvs f1 and vf500) i love them both for diff reasons the hondas build quality and ride is far above the yam , but i do love valves power delivery and sound (allspeeds) i find i can ride the honda much quicker than the valve if any body wishes to buy one i paid £800 for vf and its very tidy and original .i had to take the vf on i o w run because the rd broke down on the day (you can just see it on the i o w photos .all said i love both bikes and ride both when i can which isnt enough .ill try and post some photos at some point cheers

Hi
Many years ago a friend had a VF500 which he was selling and I was toying with the idea of buying it. One thing that put me off a bit was the reputation on the 500 of them blowing the cranks. About 2 months after I decided not to buy it the crank went.
Nice enough bike otherwise.
All the best
Keith

I thought the report was unfair onthe little yam, it's not pretending to besomething else, and they appealed to different markets, by then Honda were trying to build a v configuration dynasty and had always been known for build quality, yam with the RD were just building a bad boys motor

I don't remember Yamaha trying to convince me that the RD was a competitor to the new breed of sports 250 strokers. For me the TZRs/NSRs were the next generation. Not sure the journo got that bit entirely straight. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I remember it...

I got a VF400 for £80 years ago as a non runner. Once it was going the engine was a peach but no way near stroker acceleration.

I like the magazine as it's about my era of bikes but why do all the reports always mention the suspension doesn't do this or the tyres don't do that? Most people buy their bikes and are pleased with how they handle/perform but every journo thinks everyone should ride within 0.5mm of the bikes capiabilities 99% of the time and every road is snooker table smooth with vice like gripping tarmac. They never seem to find the appeal that most owners do by just enjoying a bike for what it is and what it can do really well. (rant over, meds kicking back in!)
