when the clutch, outer basket is in situ (just the basket all plates and cover removed)there is side ways movement should there be any movement, the rivets look as if they are seated correctly. the reason i am investigating the clutch is, at low revs i was getting poor clutch response . i inspected all plates and they are all in good nick any thoughts and reasonsons please

This is normal had a similiar issues on first rebuild but alas is ok. It moved approx 1 " either way . This apparently is to allow a bit of give when selecting gear. I did check my other one a few days ago and is the same.

Can you be clear, is it lateral movement or radial movement ?

I did check my other one a few days ago and is the same. Sometimes it looks worse than it actually is, but if you do have an inch either way that is excessive. My clutch basket is a new one and there is no where near that much free play. An inch overall is acceptable .

According to the official Yamaha service manual regarding clutch basket play & I quote, "Check for circumferential play by hand, if excess play exists, replace it" Unfortunately it doesnt specify how much is classed as excess play but I was advised by a very knowledgeable LC anorak, sorry expert, to replace mine & it had less than 10mm circumferential movement overall. with my clutch slop i have to admit it is very smooth and is easy to start off the mark with ,but i need softer springs as the heavy duty ones are just to hard to hold in for more than a few seconds, anyone know of some softer springs they'd recommend, cheers

Just out of curiosity: What radial movement? The one where one hand grips the primary gear and the other hand the attached clutch basket then twists revealing 4/6mm rotational play? Or something else entirely? Just asking. ps; Oem springs and later larger yama oem Clutch plates work a treat.
