I hate doing thread repairs but if you do go the easy out route then warm up the case around the bolt first.
Still if your not good or experienced with thread repair etc then take it to your local engineers, should not cost more than about £20'ish and you wont have the hassle of doing it yourself.

If it doesn't come out relatively easy with an easy out then drill it out & re-tap. If you snap an easy out off in the whole then your in a world of problems cos you can't drill em

Talking of thread repairs and hate doing them I had an M8 Stainless snapped in something today and had to repair that, not good, hate repairing threads and that is being able to do them so for someone new then get someone else to do it.

Are the engine bolts still available from Yam? Or somewhere else?

There's possibly not enough stud left, but a good welder should be able to 'stick' a nut on, and just unscrew it with a socket/spanner, the heat helps expand the case too.

As nik says I would be wary of using a stud extractor as they are brittle and if you use a large one they have a tendency to splay the top of the stud which can damage the alloy around it.
Also if the stud has sheared it implies it is stuck very tightly so in my opinion spark erosion is the only option for that so best left to a competent engineer.

Looking at the snap mark on the bolt it looks as it was cracked previously and I helped the situation by trying to undo the nut

be careful m8,it is easy to c**k these things up...but if your SURE it was cracked before, you should have no probs with stud extractor.good luck!

I'd take it & get it drilled out in a machine shop. If it snapped off with a socket then an easy out will not do it. Once you've snapped the very hard & brittle easy-out in the middle of the stud it's much harder to drill it out. I've just done the same with a head stud!

Well plan A is to get the top case off see how much is visible and try an automatic centre punch to see if I can shock some movement into it. If it wont budge its off to the pro's
