I have a very strange ignition problems on my 350lc, only on cold engine though........ It starts 1st or 2nd kick but when you rev it gently it looses all ignition, crank virtually stops then it fires back into life, so thought i would lift one HT cap off to see which cylinder was doing it-tried to start engine but would not even fire atall-strange i thought. So i replaced that HT cap and removed the other one and exactly the same results, the cylinder with the lead on would not fire at all? Put both caps on and it started straight away, i really dont get it! Left it running on both cyls and pulled one cap off and engine totally cut out again Any ideas anyone?? I have tried another CDI unit, coil pack, new plugs/caps and replaced the flywheel (due to mine having cracks across webs) Im wonderin if my loom is shagged colin

both plug caps need to be fitted to create the earth path on this type of ignition

Thanks for that gazza, so would that mean that when i gently rev it (and it momentarily cuts out) I am somehow loosing the earth to the coils?? does that sound feasible? colin

no I was just pointing out it won't run with one plug cap removed it could be the pick up on the stator or the stator itself a bad connection or short on the wire to the cdi unit from the kill switch
e.g. I had a RD250E (same ignition system) the wire goes from the kill switch to ignition switch and to the cdi unit when the kill switch is turned to off this wire is shorted to earth i had an intermittent spark and i traced this to the wire was shorting out on metal clip thad holds the loom below the ignition switch

Could be a fault with the high speed windings ?
