Hi, I have been asking about to see what the general consensus of opinion is. I have a completely standard 4L0, with standard exhausts that I wish to run on premix. I read that up jetting is required when running on premix. How many jet sizes should I go up to start with please? It has 4L0-01 carbs with standard 220 main jets at present. Thanks in advance for any replies. regards, Steven.

I wouldn't upjet at all as the standard carbs run on the rich side anyway, especially with standard pipes.

True...they are bit rich anyway, so you would not need to up-jet. But, if your riding style borders "abuse" or constantly touching rev limits, let me caution you to up-jet from 220 to 230 or even 240, depending on the quantum of oil mixed with gasoline.

I would go up 1 to a 230 as the oil displaces fuel and if you run a good pri mix you realy do need to go up 1 size .

Why do you want to premix? Silly idea for a standard engine.

Hi, I just did not want to run the engine on a 30 odd year old oil pump. I understand that spares are available for these pumps now, and I have also contacted Yamaha, to be told that new pumps are still available, but it was just the peace of mind in knowing that my recently restored engine is deffo getting oil that was the attraction to running on premix. I have, as well as probably most people on here, seen an LC seize due to oil pump failure. regards, Steven.

Good on you, put that pump in a snappy bag, hang it up on the garage wall and forget about it. I'm not a fan of the oil pump, read up on a test of one and it was putting uneven oil for each cylinder so effectively one cylinder would have been getting more lube but week'er mixture or the other not enough oil running rich.
The RD is a toy ( classic ), a little bit of time adding oil is never doing to do any harm as your not exactly commuting on it.

Make sure that your recently restored engine is deffo getting enough oil when running premix when shutting off at high rpm. Closed throttle, high rpm - little oil. Not so with a pump! Premix really is for bikes that are flat out most of the time i.e. race conditions. Just make sure your premix has a high oil/fuel ratio. Might smoke a bit but at least you'll be getting the oil on closed throttle, high rpm. I ran premix for a while but went back to the pump.
Once you've used a ball pen it's hard to go back to using a quill!!
