IVE JUST FINISHED PUTTING TOTETHER A VERY NICE 400 E , IT STARTED EASILY AND SOUNDS LOVELY AT TICKOVER AND BLIPPING THE THROTTLE , BUT ON THE ROAD IT WONT REV PAST 3500 RPM IT JUST SPLUTTERS , ITS ON STANDARD AIRBOX AND 2R9 CARBS WITH 180 MAINS , NEEDLE IS IN MIDDLE NOTCH AND ITS FITTED WITH SMALL CAN ALLSPEEDS , I KNOW THE MAINS ARE A FAIR BIT OVERSIZE , ITS HOW IT CAME , I TRIED SOME 150 MAINS AND ITS THE SAME

high seed coils on stator u/s ? test the resistance may not show up as they sometimes only breakdown under load

i have the E supplement workshop manual i can e mail you
West Country Windings here in Essex can repair them about £130

Have you got the carb slides in the correct carbs with the cutaway facing back towards the airbox?

With standard airbox & Allspeeds 180 mains is way too rich. Allspeeds do not require any additional jetting. Standard 145 Main Jets should do nicely Another thing to check is that the pistons are in the right way!
