HI, Has anyone registered an import from theEU . I've just MOT'd my 1980 LC on the chassis number and got the forms from DVLA but it's asking for proof of VAT and cert of conformity etc. I bought this from my Polish mate and I just paid him cash. Can anyone help or point me the right direction. Cheers

Hi mate You will need a dating certificate then just fill out form v55, get insurance on the frame number along with the MOT, take that to your local DVLA office with £55 plus first year road tax and some ID and thats it. (they may want to inspect it) There is no VAT to pay on vehicles over 20 years old imported from the EU so just leave that section blank on the V55. I can issue a dating certifcate through the Air Cooled RD club (Im the DVLA dating officer) This will cost £25. The process is not that difficult but when you look at the V55 form it just looks like a nightmare, I have to register another one of my German imports this week. Just PM me if you want to to do the dating certifcate. Hope this help. Paul

I'm confused over the 'dating certificate'. I enquired on this forum about a recent import Suzuki RG and Paul Dawkins (thanks Paul) explained it all to me. However,we got the bike mot'd (only having to make an alteration to the headlight beam) and then we insured it for my son. My missus rang DVLA while I was at work and we didn't require a dating certificate but they sent us a V55,the bike came to us with a funny little blue Swiss logbook and a letter from HM Customs to prove that duty had been paid on its import. DVLA only wanted the logbook, customs letter, mot and insurance. They didn't wish to see the bike and we were sent a tax disk and an age related registration number within 3 days. Bike is on the road and all good.

Only a few ever get inspected and its just random. Because you had a Swiss logbook they used that as proof of age, not all DVLAs offices will except this, they want a dating letter as well. If you dont have a foreign logbook you will definatly need a dating letter. Swiss logbooks are easier to read then the French and German, the DVLA staff dont understand them so they insist on a dating letter.

If you have the log book then that's proof of age !. Fill the DVLA V55 form in the best you can, there lots of information you just do not have. MOT, insurance and the pound notes and pop round to your local office. Done it now twice on German imports and never had a problem.
