Hi I took my 350 LC in for its MOT and the MOT inspector pointed out movement on the bottom of the shock pin with the bike on the centre stand grabbing hold of the rear wheel and pulling up (towards the seat) it feels like 1-2mm of free play. Looking at the bottom of the shock while doing this, it looks like the holes on the swingarm have elongated. On closer inspection the shock pin is a nice tight fit in the actual shock absorber but loose where running through the swingarm. The MOT inspector said this needed to be looked at. I took the rear swingarm off and to an engineering company to get the holes rebushed so the pins would fit tighter. While I was waiting, I fitted my spare machamix which seems to have the same problem. My question is have any of you noticed this movement? Is it common?

tbh,i think mine has a little free play.i thought it was normal because its held by a pin rather than being bolted tight.is it not to allow for the slight change of angle as the shock compresses? think mine is fairly tight fit in shock, but not as so in swinga.tho i wouldve noticed if the holes in swinga were elongated.

I had this back in the 90's where my bike failed an mot for this.
I bought the genuine bushes and replaced them only to find that there was the same play. I had bought the bushes from the same bike shop that failed it so they knew they had been changed.
They passed it as they knew they were changed and had the "well they are done now" attitude which hacked me off.

Some bikes are known to have a little play in the swing arm, My 1999 ZX6R had a little movement and MOT tester said it was known with some bikes.

Find a different place for your Mot's, some where that they just do Mot's or a back street garage where you can pop in and have a chin wag with them. Place I use is a car garage with no interest in doing any work on a bike but the two lads there are bikers.
My Thunderace has a 750 swingarm and changed every bearing and bush, there is still slight play in the one link.

Just checked the wheel and head bearings and a squeeze of the brakes ;D Steve

my folks live in bulgaria, and took their espace for their version of m.o.t. but the car wouldnt fit in the garage for some reason.so the tester went out to the car, looked at the screen, asked dad if the brakes worked, then rit a ticket out for him.long way to go for mot tho.

I have known this small movement on most monoshock Yams 80lc 125lc dt 175 and 350lc. Never had an MOT failure, they were usually more interested in leaking shocks and wheel bearings. As rdstars suggests ,try another MOT tester.

The little RD50MX's and DT50MX's use to have quite a bit of play on the monoshocks lower pin even when brand new straight out of the crate. We use to remove the pins on every service and grease them as if they were left the pins use to seize in the bush. Tone
