So, there I was with time on my hands and decided to refurbish my oil pump, having read all the posts etc about making sure all the crud is cleaned out and seals replaced.
The easy bit: getting the oil pump out. The hard/impossible bits (a) the lock pin on which the adjustment disc rotates against is impossible to remove. God knows why (b) The pipe unions are also impossible to remove as suggested in the original post. Result - one broken pipe union!
So now I have an oil pump that is a useless paperweight and my choices are to locate another one from somewhere or convert to premix. I'm totally against running premix on these bikes but may not have any choice now. Beware of these pitfalls if any of you are planning a refurb.

To remove the pin, wind the adjuster wheel round so you can get a good grip with a decent pair of pliers or a socket if you have one small enough. It's a normal R/H thread so unscrew anti-clockwise.
You aint gripping them tight enough if you slipped round & broke off the pipe union, I have a couple of spares so PM me your address & I will bung them in the post or if you like, send me the pump & seals etc & I will refurbish the pump for you, ultrasonic clean it & do the shim stack FOC

Cheers nik! Managed to get it unscrewed. I was worried I might shear it off but it's come out OK. Now need to source a new pipe union. Some old pumps around so hopefully should source one to cannibalise.

Cheers marsbar. I've just bought one on evil bay for £4.99! Can you believe it? What a day. Thanks to all for your support. It's nice to know that the LCers are such a fantastic bunch of helpful enthusiasts. Should be up and running as soon as the pump arrives and I can get the unions off it.

I bought a small 3.5mm (i think) socket screwdriver from ebay for this job, was about 2quid landed! amazing value to have the right tool.
