Hi All
Just finshed rebuilding my 1980 250lc. Started about third kick which pleased me no end, but lots of white smoke. took it round the block and still same smoke and reluctant to tick over and bogs down at 4-5K and wouldn't go ant higher if you wanted (which I don't as it's had rebuilt crank and rebore so good running in needed). Have started it a couple of times since, running it for 5-10 mins and it starts 1st or second kick no problem but still heavy smoke. Have checked the oil pump and carb settings, they are 170 main jet with needle set 4 positions from the top as per haynes manual. Smoke is even from both pipes. Does it just need a good run or is there something I'm missing?

Could just be the freezing temperatures we're having. How much is the temp. gauge moving ? How did you reset the ignition timing ? Haynes manual says 190 for the main jet. If I ran my bike for 5~10 mins it would smoke heavily in these temperatures.

Hi,
Until up to running temp and ran for a few miles I'd expect it to still be smoking.
If you think of all the oil during assembly that will be lying in the engine slowly being burnt off and all the partial burnt oil being spat in to the pipes it will need a good run to clear out. They will splutter if you try and rev it when not at full temp and a bit oily.
Give it a few miles and see how it goes. If still smokey might be an idea to check pump minimum stroke and oil output.

as said 190 mains are listed for the 250 might be worth checking pilot jet size too listed as 20.0 and air screw out 1.1/8 turns as a base setting

Cheers for the advice. jets should be 190, so I will replace these. will give it a thorough warm up down to the MOT station and see where we are at!
Cheers
