Hi, all. Wish I'd found this site at the start of my rebuild rather than the end! I am rebuilding a 1980 250lc and as part of the engine rebuild this has been taken out to 275cc. The problem is that on adding coolant it is leaking out at the cylinder head gasket. I am using a pattern head gasket from Yambits and have torqued the head down to 17ftlbs as the haynes manual says (but this seems low). The head is flat to within 2-3 thou of an inch. However, at this torque it doesn't seem to be compressing the gasket beyond the steel sealing rings around the bore. Is this torque setting right? I did them up to 21ft lbs, but there was still a small leak. I don't want to go too high for fear of wrenching out one of the studs - Help!!

Most use a small ammount of silicon when using pattern head gaskets, this may help. Have you run the motor thro' a few heat cycles & then re-torqued head? OEB

Might be to late now, but did you clean and lubricate the threads on the head bolts ?

Thanks so much for the hep everyone, really appreciated. I will try the silicon route and if this doesn't work it's the genuine yamaha part - probably should have been this in the first place!
Cheers
