I've just spent the evening with a tin of Nitromors paint stripper on my barrels and head but it's not touching the paint. Anyone recommend a way of cleaning them up ready for painting. I thought I would try to save a bit of cash by not having them Vapour blasted but if I end up spending £50 on paint stripper it sort of defeats the object! Also what softens baked on gaskets? Cheers

I 'liberated' some industrial paint stripper from my shop floor at work, we use it to strip powder coat so it's pretty hard core. It didn't however take all the paint off of my head / barrels (there's a photo of my head before painting in my project thread) I figured that if it was that robust that it hadn't flaked off and the paint stripper hadn't budged it then it was a good enough base to go over. IMG_1558 by tunneruk, on Flickr I've used Plasticote BBQ paint which looks mustard and has baked on really nice. I haven't however got it near any petrol so can't comment on that .......... I bought some Plasticte BBQ paint as others seem to rate it. TunnerUK do you know the make of stripper you acquired? I will google it and see if it's available. Cheers.

when i was at college 13 years ago doing my car spraying apprenticeship i was taught that if you lightly score the old paint before applying the stripper (use a old bit of 40-60 or 80 grit paper) then as soon as the paint stripper is applied quickly cover the panel in a polythene sheet (carrier bag or bin bag will do) . this method is very effective and less messy.

Found the same problem with the new Nitromors, there is a guy on the selling 'old style' tins, but probably not many left now. yes can't find any now.
from one ad....'Dichloromethane free'

Aircraft Coating Stripper Spray can or gallon jugs 100% ali safe. Ugly chemicals though, use outdoors only and stay upwind of it. Spray on wait a half hour, use the garden hose to spray wash the goop off. Repeat if necessary.. often not required, but?. Even removes baked on oil from pistons :-)
