I would say yes, it has to run... MOT check will include checking the exhaust system to see if it leaks / blows so engine must run imo

Thats usually the response I get on my car when I take it (its all colour coded underneath!)... I think the MOT inspector was jealous though with my bike lol- he said - MOT:"who panted that tank?" Me: "huh?" MOT "its a crap paint job, reactions all over it" Me:"Its been stood 8 years? what are you on about??" MOT: "front tyre is crap" Me"what are you on about? " And so on... I burst out laughing in his face at one point. I think he was trying to be serious though but then he passed it without advisories lol

I've had a couple over the years Mot'd without having to run the engine..... Basically told them I couldn't get the bike started (After it had been booked in) Took the bikes in the back of a van..... and no problems......Worth a shot.

As i understand it a vehicle doesnt actually have to run,as long as its roadworthy.that was before all this emissions crap though

The bike has to run.
The tester must check for fuel leaks with engine running and not running. He must also check for exhaust leaking. With the front wheel raised of the ground he must turn the bars to the stops each side and see if the engine revs increase. There are no emmision tests for motorbikes. Where do you live ?

Well there we have it lol... shows how much I know (err... thought I know) You were 100% correct mate. If the bike will not start the tester should refuse to test.

Come to think of it when I got mine done it was in the good old days......no rolling road or computer link up......In fact the tester just walked round the bikes, went "lovely" then came back with a certificate......Mind you was a bus garage......Then it was the tester that had to have be "authorised" to test bikes......One of them even had an old honk honk horn.

The bike must of been registered before August 1973 to use a bulb honk honk horn. Sad I know but its all been drummed into me over the last few weeks.

rider reactions must have been so much better in the olden days to allow the use of honk- honks .lol

Was around 1985 when mot'd.......In a bus garage way, way up north near Skye.....Alasdair was in his late 60's then, I worked next door in the Vauxhall garage for his brother.....In those days the tester was authorised to do different vehicles and Alasdair just happened to mention he could do the bike, the honk honk horn was from the toy shop in Kyle and was for a kiddies bicycle, he did ask me to take it off afterwards......Those were the days, the coppers up there had an old Morris Marina van as one of them totalled their new patrol car after a liquid lunch! The only time you'd get a pull was when you were parking, or getting on the bike!

Never thought about it before but why do they emission test cars but not bikes? I then thought it might just be my local hicksville tester not being bothered to do it but it's all computerized so i guess he would have to if it was part of the test

Hopefully older bikes will be exempt from the emission tests otherwise it'll be curtains for strokers.........
