As I also own 4 stroke bikes, I usually stick in the same stuff I use in them ie semi synth 10w/40. Or you can use dedicated transmission oil like Silkolene light gear oil.

I use Silkolene Light Gear (as mentioned above) - but to be honest I can't say why other than it was recommended and I've never had any problems with it

Thats all I've thrown in my little LC, the correct fluid for mine is SAE 10W-30 but most places dont sell it (car places dont, neither did halfords when I checked for example).

Only thing about car oil is it can apparently make the clutch slip, although I haven't used it so can't confirm that. This isn't a problem with 4 stroke bike oil as it's designed for wet clutches. I've also heard of people using ATF, but haven't tried it myself either. Stick with 10/40 bike oil or light gear oil and you won't go far wrong

I wouldn't use ordinary car oil as it's not designed for gearboxes and doesn't have the shear qualities of motorcycle engine oil and gear oil, both of which are designed to go into gearboxes. Personally, I use the left-over from the Castrol 1 Racing semi-synthetic that I put in my GSX-R750 - just happens to suit me economically as it does both bikes. Like the others have said, a light gear oil will also be OK or any 10W40 motorcycle oil.

My oil of choice is the Silkolene light, funny because I don't like any of their other products! I was changing oil so much this season chasing a clutch problem that I started using 10/40 cheap motor oil. No clutch slip, no problems and the oil stayed cleaner, longer. Must be the detergents in it i guess.
But go with the Silkolene, you won't go wrong

Any GL4 gear oil is a 'Fine' choice.. (GL4 spec means clutch pack friendly)

I use either a fully synthetic light gear oil 75w 90 or ATF, used both with no issues. I would always use a lighter oil in a 2 stroke gear box, you don't need car/4t bike oil in there as 4 strokes operate within completely different temperature ranges and conditions. Also a heavy oil can cause clutch drag and poor gear selection from cold on the 2 strokes. More performance is to be had from a specifically designed synthetic gear box oil. Further more, as mentioned, car oils can have friction modifiers which can destroy your clutch, why put in 4t bike oil which is engineered to lubricate bigends, mains, cams, valves when you can put in an oil specifically designed for use in a 2 stroke gear box for the same price, if not cheaper. It makes no sense to me ATF is same story as a good light gear oil, its specific for transmissions although I will warn that it goes off pretty quick and again watch out for friction modifying additives I've successfully used Putoline light gear oil in a heavily modified CR85 motocross bike with perfect clutch and gearbox operation. Used Castrol ATF in a YZ125 crosser which actually cured a clutch slip issues I had and also used it in my 125LC's without any issues. Just my opinion Adam
