Hi All I know this has been covered before but..... I am painting my 31K head & barrels, to standard spec gloss for head and barrels and satin for cases. Was going to use PJ1 Gloss Black Engine and Case Paint. But can't get it anywhere is there an alternative, has anyone used this stuff Techcote High Temperature Gloss Black Paint.
Thanks for the help.

beware recoat times with plasticote , dont get this problem with pj1 ,also pj1 is far more fuel resistant.

B&C Express used to supply PJ1 but they dont do it anymore so they have changed over to techcote i have used it and had friends who are happy with the finish aswell.

in australia i could only find 1 outlet for PJ1, ,about $25 a tin plus postage, couldnt find plastikote at any of the local joins, so at supacheap auto i found this stuff by 3M, am doing the head , barrells and upper and lower cases with it and am going to have the side cases powdercoated gloss black, this black i think is close to satin, am happy with the result, how it holds up to fuel i dont know, will have to wait and see.

IMO you do not need hi temp paint at all I think it's actually detrimental as Cheap paint will bubble when you genuinely/seriously overheat your motor giving one irrefutable evidence that you've f**ked Up :-) Also don't personally like powder coat as it's too thick the resultant bits look plastic dipped. IMO save your $$ for better things, like Beer :-)

Hi Arrow, You've achieved a great finish with the Plastikote. Was that straight out of the tin, or are there any hints / tips to be aware of first. Only reason why I ask, is I have used recently used plastikote BBQ paint, but cannot get the same quality finish you have. It always seems to come out a little dull & patchy for me ??

Hi witterz, straight out of the tin mate no gimmics and no primer. The head was prepared with paint stripper and washed off in the sink with washing up liquid then rinsed. Make sure the metal is hot to the touch before starting, I use a heat gun. Also it was a hot sunny day, this really helps, I have no special facilities, all done in the garden and in the open. Keep the job warm on and off for the first hour or so, fag/coffee breaks then a quick warm thats all. After about an hour or so go over again and put some extra heat in to cure the paint, you should still be able to keep your hand on the underside of the metal so don't go mad. I have used this method on exhausts aswell (see pics) and to be honest the first 6" or so of the headers will go a little flatter in use but the rest of the pipe stays pristine. s1083.photobucket.com/albums/j384/aktrion/See the mastercylinder below the top is BBQ paint and the main body is NOS. You can make the finish more glossy if you want by T cut and then wax polish, exhausts too. Attachments:

Wait a minute... Am I not correct thinking YPVS barrels should be satin? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I know with 110% certainty that the YPVS head should be gloss thogh. Edit: Nice pics arrow.

Thanks for all the replies think I am going to give Techcote High Temperature Gloss Black Paint at try (as far as I am aware H&B are gloss finish, if I am wrong please let me know). PJ1 is unavailable just now something to do with the EU not liking there labels!

I used Simoniz Engine enamel on mine. I got it locally in Maccess in Broxburn (trade account) its about £4 a can as far as I remember. Ive used it on the cases on my ZRX and was very impressed with it (it aint fallen off yet.) I think it does a very good job!
