do you need to remove every speck of rust before applying por 15? got the metal ready in the tank for about 4 hours still got plenty of rust spots, don't get me wrong its 10 times better than it was but not as good as I was expecting. opinions please.

I did two rd125LC tanks and my Honda mbx tank, all had rust in but Not rotten, all i did was put vinegar in for a week but kept emptying it every day and filtering out the crap from the vinegar and re using, then a wash out with some thinners and finally filled with petrol for storage, until I'm ready for prep work and paint, the petrol with keep it sound,as said before unless its leaking i wouldn't use any sealer. ALSO THE WORSE THING I HAVE COME ACROSS IN A TANK IS WHEN ITS BEEN LEFT THE OLD PETROL, THAT STINKS.also get that smell in the bottom of carbs when been left for years ;D

d rather buy a new tank than put that shite in it.shell out a wad n new paint then that happens Don't always have the choice, have you tried to find a mint 31k tank for a decent price. had one mint inside and it now has rust spots, ethanol in the fuel is hydroscopic so absorbs the water but goes off allowing the water to separate and cause rust. That's why I used por 15 on my other tank even though it only had some slight surface rust and no holes. Steve

My tank is "fooked" as well. I went through the whole process and filled pin holes treated inside and six year later it stated leaking again. I think treating old tanks is only small life extender you cant garantee that you have got it all. Also if you treat inside and then spray outside dont heat the tank up to get paint to go off. I think that once rust gets in its like cancer. Its thin mild steel and I dont think the quality was that good to start will either. I was looking on ebay and see some clever chap has a brand new tank hes fabricated for £350. It looks ok on pic will have to ask him about it any thoughts ?

Big thanks for all the opinions and advice. Rinsed the tank out and dried it last night with the heat gun. Looked a lot better once it was dry. The tank was not leaking but was very rusty inside. My reason for using the por15 is to prevent further rust due to the ethanol/ water/evaporation problem, what midlifecrisisrd said, which is why I presume the tank was rusty in the 1st place. I guess that if your using your bike daily or even weekly all year round this may not be a problem if your putting fresh fuel in. Any way put the stuff in this afternoon and hope its gonna be o.k. The tank was bone dry after several sessions with the heat gun. It will be three or four weeks before I put it to the test with fuel so will update on the results as and when. Ravedaddy did yours fail before or after contact with fuel ? Have researched this problem for the last 6 months and the overwhelming opinion is that por15 is the stuff to use jeremy and roy show you how but this is what convinced me it was good stuff jump to 7.50 on the video www.youtube.com/user/holdenvintageclassic#p/u/43/c606z0NhMFQ
