Yep, just done a full re-build on the 4LO. Can't believe how much people charge to do this, childs play, really.

Thanks for the encouragement but it's with Mick Abbey now. It's getting a full look over, whatever it needs and a road tune. A pair of Kenny's TSA pipes are on order and it'll be a flyer. ;D

Sorry to hear about this mate, but you may have come away better off now that Mick has your engine But yeah I have read through all of this thread and I too absolutely hate the Yam 'auto-lube' its absolutely rubbish, take off that pump and throw it in a dark corner in the garage. BUT, another thing to add is that the fuel that we fill our 30 year old machines with is of totally different composition to the stuff the LC was designed to run on all those years ago. Its 10% ethanol now-a-days and that makes two strokes run hot/leaner so its more than a good idea to use a lead replacement in your fuel. Lead, is an excellent cylinder lubricant, it will cool down combustion, reduce the chance of 'ping' or 'pre-ignition' and generally improve this rocket fuel they sell at pumps these days. Other things you can do to make absolutely sure that this will never happen again apart from 32:1 premix and lead additive are; Cooler plug, go up to a 10. Larger main jets, better to run rich than be sorry. Use the best 2 stroke oils on the market (fully synthetic ester/castor oils are the best) i.e Silkolene Pro Comp 2 or Castrol A747. Oh and accurately maintain the piston to bore clearance and/or ring gap, too large of a clearance and you'll get blow-by, loss of compression, risk of port snag. Too small and it will nip up in no time. Don't take any risks, next time it could throw a rod or even worse you could get really hurt. That's my opinion anyways, others may disagree, hope that helps you out mate Adam

The pumps wear hardly at all on the inside, but can wear more on the outside, this will reduce the stroke. Set the stroke up regularly and you will not go far wrong, also make sure you have the correct pump for the bike, they can get swapped around quite a bit in 30 years !
