Is there meant to be any play on the sprocket / cush drive or should it be as tight as a nun's chuff ?

well it depends what u mean by play?they are rubber s u will be able to move it from side to side but if its a case that there is actual play in it its prob the cush drive rubbers wore.some people cut up milk cartons and place in eside rubbers to ake play out or u can buy new cush drive rubbers. havent said that if ur planning on getting ur wheels powdercaoted it will 'tighten' up the play in it but really depends how bad the whole thing is

they have slop on the outer edge so you can move the sprocket clockwice and anticlockwise about 4mm

I had an arc of 1,5 mm rubber, I used that on the cush drive to get most of the slack away. I just applied the rubber on the side which is under load during engine braking. I glued my rubber in place with some sort of rubber sealant.
