Got a loud knocking noise coming from my motor . It's very hard to tell exactly where its coming from , but if i put a long screw driver with my ear against it, its most pronounced around the exhaust flange area's of both barrels. Is this most likely piston slap , or could it be clutch related . My clutch basket was badly notched so i filed it, which has given an amount of back and forward free play of the clutch plates - also there's about 5-6mm clutch drum play. I know these parts are worn and in time i will replace when funds are available, but there's no change in the noise if i pull the clutch lever in. I would expect some change in the noise level if the clutch area was the problem. Please any advice gladly welcomed.

thanks for that, me and a mate of mine are both doing up bikes at the moment, poor bugger knows less than me, i will start throwing around the term piston slap to impress him, at the moment he probably thinks its when somebody slaps you around the side of the head with a piston.lol. but seriously , does it mean it time for a rebore and bigger pistons, rings?

Cheers butchers, have taken the head off and can get play front to back with finger pressure on both pistons, which also gives a knocking noise the same as when its running. Barrels to come off tomorrow if i get time before work for a look.

Well I'm a very happy, happy chap, fired the all girl up and what a very quiet engine i have now ;D. Checked every thing out, both barrels & pistons measured up OK to spec, but after a little reading up, i found i had them cheap Taiwanese pistons fitted. New set of "Mitaka" pistons fitted and now piston slap free - "JAP PISTONS RULE OK" .

Nice one I'm on a mission this winter to quieten my engine down at the second attempt Me too, or that was the plan to rebuild it. Will start a thread soon on a completely new 385 YPVS Steve
