I had torqued the head down to 17 as it said in the haynes manual but noticed a small bead of water coming out of the join once the engine got up to temp ,so had to tighten up the head a little more is that usual ?

it has happened to a few people m8 was it a genuine yam gasket you need to let the engine cool before re tourqing them. Some people also use a tiny amount of sealer on the gasket too Mine leaked in the centre of head so i used the sealer method

Did you follow the numbered sequence marked on the head ?

Yes sure did 1-8 tighten,Ihave also now put a small smear of sealant on there and has seemed to fix the problem, but I think 17lb per haynes manual is a little light !!

In the Genuine Yamaha Workshop manual it says :
Cylinder Head Insall new cylinder head gasket and cylinder head. Note: The cylinder head bolts should be tightened in the order of numbers and in two steps. Caution: After installing the engine to frame completely, start the engine, and raise the temperature gauge up to 60 degrees C (86 degrees F). Let the engine cool down and retighten the cylinder head bolts to specification. Cylinder head tightening torque: 24Nm (17 ft-lb)
Hope this helps. Tone

I had exactly the same problem as you at 17 ft lb and it was still leaking after a re-torque to 19 ft lb. My solution? - I bought a genuine Yam gasket. It cost £62.50!!! Ouch!! Fixed the problem though and no leaks at the correct 17 ft lb.

Mine leaked from the center. Took it off put a smear of high temp silicon sealer on and put it back on. Ran it let it cool down and torqued it up to about 20 ft lbs and its been fine.

Mine was black shit but it seems to have done the trick, and it was more the fact that I was tightning up the head a little more, but I think that it as minimal really. Now just got to get on to the other 110 problems I have got.
