Hi new to LC's, have an Rd400e and a couple of kettles. Bought this cheap as it has an engine noise and a few other problems. It's a 4L1 frame with a 1WT engine fitted. The engine noise seems to eminate from the clutch area its quite noisy on tickover but gets a bit better as the revs reach 3000. Had a quick run on it and it seems to go ok but when I got back it had pumped a bit of oil out of the crankcase breather and was leaking oil from the left hand casing. The over flow from the fuel tank was leaking, it has a harris filler cap fitted, not sure if this is the problem. Sorry to ask loads of questions on my first visit but woould appreciate any help or advise. Grant

Nice bike gladders, hopefully not much work to sort out. As suggested, check color of oil first, this could explain the reason why you are getting oil out of the breather pipe. Next job, take of Lhs casing to see which oil seal is leaking, its either the gear change shaft or sprocket oil seal, both aren't that bad to change.

Check the oil level, if it's milky it's the water pump seal as suggested. If level high but not milky may be the oil pump seal.
That will leak into the gearbox and blow out the overflow and might leak out the seals on LHS. If oil too high or contaminated it could cause transmission noise, either that or the dreaded piston slap. Hopefully the water seal and bearing as simple fix.
As for the fuel overflowing I had a similar style cap and can see venting/leaking could be an issue if tank full.

Cheers chaps,
Dropped oil out today if by milky you mean like a silvery grey then thats what my oil looks like, how difficult is the seal to change.
Removed the right hand engine case and there is 10mm of movement in the clutch basket with no obvious damping, could this be the source of the engine noise, I have seen kits for dampers for aircooled, 350lc and 350R will any of these fit my engine? Grant

Great looking bike, but milky is what it sounds like , silvery grey oil means your grinding metal. sounds like you have found the problem so i'll shut up now.

Yes mate, these old bikes do end up with a lot of basket free play and is the most likely cause of the noise. I fitted the damper rings to mine as didn't have any fitted a while ago to see if that quietened the chatter down, but made no difference at all. If there is a kit, let me know as i may try it. Water pump seal isn't that bad to fit, worth fitting a new bearing too when its stripped down.
