i think im gonna go for some custom made pipes in stainless steel like the jim lomas style, i have found one site on the web for the cutting patterns for stainless cone sections etc, but want to know if others are readily availible for pipes and expansion chambers for pipes that come out on one side, i have little experience in stainless work, but thought its worth a go, i can handle a tig welder, and have made fuel, coolent and oil pipe runs for spitfire fighter aircraft (worked for a spit restoration company)but all in brass and copper, and these things weave in and out all around a merlin engine, so a little 350 ypvs should (he hopes) be a doddle! ?. any pointers and assistance in getting hold of plans would be greatly appreciated !

Certainly Pretty. Was a bit appalled by the stories recounted by my neighbour (RIP) who was a front line mechanic on Spits during 'the war'. Said these things were Nothing like their reputations.. being troublesome, barely reliable things requiring many hours of maintenance for each hour of actual running time. When the Spits landed the first thing was to rush covers over the tires and other valuable bits as these motors would pretty well leak their entire oil supply overnight. Myth and fact once again .. at odds.

Hello,
Other side of the coin, sort of - when i was an apprentice, round about 1960!
The story as that the Merlin engine was sent to the states under liecense and the Yanks said that they couldn't make it that accurate.
Myth and fact?

MASTERBILL, CORRECT, THE MERLIN WAS MADE UNDER LICENCE BY PACKARD, AND WERE ALL USED IN THIER AIRCRAFT, NAMELY THE MUSTANG ETC,
AND, THANKS NIK, BUT I HAVE DECIDED NOW TO USE MY EXISTING F2 PIPES WITH MY OWN DOWNPIPES GRAFTED ON, AND CANS BOLTED ON TO A FLANGE PLATE,
