;D,battery light is coming on in my missus car the last day r so.i think the alternator is on its way out but how do i check it....i know theres a positive red wire and neg smal black wire in it ...im getting 12.04 volts here

12 volts on idle and 14-15volts at 2500rpm i believe is the norm for most cars
also batterys fail more often than alternators in my experience plus there are two other possabilitys that can make the battery light come on,slipping or loose belt and poor wiring connections on the alternator,starter motor and battery.
i remember my last car had nackered engine mounts and it used to pull the wires off the starter motor now and then causing the same symptoms as a dead alternator.
i do believe quick-fit or halfords do free battery tests ,not that i recomend going to either lol

cheers 2 stroker....im getting 12 volts at idle on the alt ,will have to clean and check conections and test battery.............

what car ? Fords have a smart charging system controlled by an ecu have had engine bay harness problems in the middle of the loom also has a pattern alternator put the light on on two different cars two different make alternators only the Ford one worked ( I work in a Ford garage )
