Been talking to a mechanic at my local bike shop today, who races R1's. He reckons you are better off fitting a smaller front sprocket, as first gear is very tall (100mph plus!) which I agree with. Trouble is, this will make the speedo read incorrectly. Question: will it say its going faster or slower than it actually is, and also, will it record more, or less mileage?

The R1 speedo sensor is on the output shaft of the gearbox, every time a gear cog passes the hall sensor it induces a voltage, these pulses are what tells the tacco how fast the output shaft is spinning. If you fit a smaller front sprocket, the the rear wheel will turn slower at any given revs compared to the original so the speedo will read slow therefore you will need a speedo healer.

Sounds about right - so this means the mileage recorded will be lower than actual?
