so decided to investigated why my Ypvs is running hot.Recent rebuild/ rebore new pistons ect. Temperature gauge shows 3/4 most of the time & up to just before the red if stuck in traffic. Water pump seems ok can see water flowing with rad cap off. Changed temp sensor & still the same so decided to check the thermostat. On taking housing off discovered there is no thermostat just the body with rubber seal but the middle bit been removed !!!! Question is will this be why it's running hot I thought this may make it run cooler ??????

put the correct stat in. the pump needs something to push against. With the stat missing the water will just shoot in at the back of the head & out at the front, a bit of resistance will encourage it to move around the whole of the head.
These things run hot anyway, the rads are too small.

Had a similar problem with my YPVS wasn't sure if last owner had taken head off but was told a genuine yamaha head gasket is always best so swopped it over and no problems overheating

Ignition timing ok? Mixture not too lean? advance/retard mechanism working(check with strobe light). air leak on inlet side? Head gasket leaking internally? As said only use genuine for the head as pattern are naff. having no Thermostat shouldnt make it run hotter than normal,it will take longer to warm up though,i never run a Stat on the LC and it runs in the lower 3rd of gauge. Bear in mind if its been rebuilt and had a rebore it will run hotter due to an increase in friction, using a good oil will help keep temp down and give smoother running(Castrol TTS,Motul800 work well). Also you can use Redline water wetter in with the coolant to keep temps down if everything else checks out okj. HTH Dave
