anyone have any ideas what would cause this damage to the right hand crank seal ? just rebuilt the engine and straight away it caused this, cant see anything catching or anything obvious? got new seal coming but don't want to put it in until i found out what caused it. parts book shows the castle bits facing outwards but haynes manual shows them inwards which is the way i had it. really strange Attachments:

that would mean haynes is right and part book is wrong ?
so i had it the right way then?

The Haynes manual discription & photos all show the castles facing the bearing which is right. Only the exploded line drawing shows it the other way. That seal is a mess why is it packed with grease only things I can think of that would cause that are. 1. Seal not in it's locating groove, therefore sticking out too far & chewed up by the primary drive cog. 2. Something got trapped between the cog & the seal which chewed it up.

haynes manual tells you to pack it with grease? it was def still sitting in its locating ring. cant see anything lying anywhere that could have caught it.
really got me beat this one

They mean you pack the gap between the two sealing lips on the inside where it contacts the collar of the primary gear to prevent wear and help sealing.

Could be worse m8, took mine down the road, opened it up and bang . Stripped it down and right hand piston skirt had shattered - full strip down revealed the tail end of a spring washer jammed in the crank - thought i could get the summer out of it, before a full strip down, oh silly me . Stripping down my second engine (spare) now, hoping to find a decide crank out of the two motors - well getting to know the bike that little bit better .

is that a woodruffe key slot on top the crank? if so, did 1 escape out the back of the slot and eat the seal when the drive gear was fitted? That's what I thought when I first seen it but the key was still inside the cog bit when I removed it
