After looking for ages for a decent reasonably priced 350 top end for my 250 I got the chance of a good cheap 400 one. Martin Bell machined the barrels to line the ports up, I think it`s 2mm off the base and 7mm off the top. As you can see you loose a fin. Had a knackered 250 engine lying under the bench so stripped that and had the crank rebuilt using LC conrods. They recon they oil the bearings better and this engine will rev so it all helps. Also Kingsley redid the squish on the heads for me. Did about 10 miles on it last night, Feels great, more power, can`t wait to get a few miles on it to see what it go`s like. Need to jet it up a bit as it`s running a bit lean (250 jets) but i`m pleased with the way it feels without any tweeking. Hope to see some of you over the summer and let you see how well it go`s.

Ive thought about trying to get this mod done myself as I have all the relevent parts. Have you changed your primary drive or altered your gearing? Also what oil pump are you using or are you premixing. Keep us updated 4ce on hows it going.
Dave.

Thanks for the invite Norbo. It`s a canny way from here but we`ll see what we can do nearer the time. Put this photo up with the others but didn`t materialize. Buckshot. Haven`t changed the primary gearing, or oil pump. Only thing we`re going to change is the jetting. Will run it a while and let you know how it`s going.

I have a spare 250 1A1 [DX or E??] engine with me. Been always thinking of owning a 400 but unable to get one.
Some one said there is "a long rod motor" which can convert a 250/350 into a 400. Any advice?
This mod you have done...seems a great in-genuine idea. Is the bike running like a true blue 400 or better? Please give me as much info as possible..would like to try it out.

Last time I had it out we were running standard 400 jets. It was faster than when it was a 250 with more mid range power but just hit a wall and wouldn`t rev out. I`m thinking about fitting 400 clutch basket and primary drive. Not touched it for a while as I`ve been side tracked with a 400F project.

Had a long thought about this mate.
Why did you not fit a 350 cylinder and head...simple, more easily available, proven???
