Hi,
Hope it's ok to mention aircooleds here! I know a forum member is thinking of a mono aircooled project and wanted to see some pics. If anyone else is thinking of the same sort of project, these pics may help. My original Rd400e special that I built had an Lc top bracket for the shock welded in by Nigel Hill at Saxon Racing, and used an Lc swingarm and eventually an Rgv remote reservoir shock. This was in the days before digital cameras so no close up pics I'm afraid;
The Rgv shock was a little too hard especially with the race seat
Years later, my new 400 project frame had a different shock mount welded in using an Lc shock
The Lc shock was tired, so I bought an R6 shock which was relatively cheap at £30.00. It is 20mm shorter than an Lc shock so I planned to get a bracket made up so I could dabble with ride heights,
If the back end sits too low the upper arms of the Lc swingarm hit the Rd frame rails when the suspension is compressed, so you need to maintain the Rd's ride height. I had bought this frame without a log book and the frame number wasn't found when I had it checked out. Big lesson learnt here. Don't do any work before you know it is legit !! Didn't want to go the "Q" plate route, so looked for and sourced another Rd mono frame for £30.00, with log book The monoshock top plate was in a different and more conventional position;
Got this powdercoated, but had some welding done first to bring the mounting point back to compensate for the R6 shock;
If you are using an Lc swingarm and want to retain the aircooled wheel and brake set up, the aircooled torque arm can be used;
Another problem is the battery box will be in the way of a cantilever set up. I chopped mine about a bit and resited it further back in the frame;
I made cardboard templates for a rear mudguard and got my local engineers to fab it up for me;
The Police would need a Helicopter to read the numberplate . I sold the bike before I could adjust that!!
Hope this helps anyone thinking of an aircooled mono project. The Lc swingarm slides straight into an aircooled frame so that is easy enough, and the width at the axle is the same too.
Regards
Dusty
