When lightened do you not loose engine momentum a lot easier ? . I know on my tuned Mk2 Escort long hills were a pig with a lightened flywheel!!

First you need to ask yourself WHY you want to lighten it? For faster rev pickup? Less stress on the crank bearing? Also, if you lighten your flywheel, you MUST rebalance it (or at least check the balance afterwards) as you will set it out of balance by removing material. Balancing a flywheel ghetto style is fairly easy, but you need to make a jig and a shaft (preferably a coned shaft that you can bolt the flywheel onto) so you can spin the flywheel. Making a jig is easy if you have a lathe. You can use skateboars bearings (just rip the dust seals out and clean the bearings from grease so they spin easily) and bolt them onto the jig with M8 bolts. When your jig is done, it shall look something like this: img695.imageshack.us/img695/2091/flywheeljig.pngAfter that is done, have fun balancing it! Don't make the mistake of drilling the light side lol, I did that once and later I realised I drilled the wrong side. Always, ALWAYS be 100% sure you drill the HEAVY side. ;D
