Guys,
Can anyone help me decide if i can mix a set of upper and lower 4L0 crankcases.
I have a frame and matching set but the lower half has the usual chain damaged part. I have a much nicer complete lower half but am not sure what the issues might be by not matching them as a pair.
any comments welcome

As a general rule, I would advise that you didn't mix up crank cases. I would see if it is possible to repair the chain damaged case if you want to keep it matching numbers. It would be well worth paying out to get it fixed in the long term.

The two halves are machined as a pair to ensure that all bores that start off in two halves are round, parallel and the correct size when bolted together.
If you use two un-matched halves you cannot ensure the above.

Cases are generally line bored,so it wont work.

I know it's not recommended but I tried it a few years ago. Spoke to Terry Shepherd about it. He told me they all machined so close it should not be a problem. It wasn't, bike ran fine.

It's true... but sometimes you get a real mismatch and then it doesn't work and you have start all over again.. THAT is what the risk actually is :-)

Get them measured on a CMM (co-ordinate measuring machine)
