Hi lads steves my name. I have to admit i have been using this site for about 18 months now, and its unreal how much knowledge there is out there. i,ve lost track of how many times ive used the forum to sort out problems on my bike. and i do thank you all. but this is my first post. I am about ready to mot my bike then i can get it registered, problem is when i start it up coolant starts weeping from crankcase nuts 2 and 3 under the engine (haynes page 70) and it does get faster the longer the bike idles. i was wondering if anyone had come across this problem before. for coolant to come out of the bottom i would assume there is a crack in the barrel, or have the crankcases not been sealed properly during reassembly by previous owner. any help would be appreciated lads before i start pulling the engine apart. cheers steve

Hi Steve I doubt very much if it's weeping out of these bolts but nuts 2 & 3 are next to a drain hole through the crankcase, try looking at the head gasket above the carbs it may be weeping there & running down through the drain hole.

You would be able to smell if it's petrol or not

Sure it's not leakiing from the union at the back of head or one of the hoses in that area

Steve, this is the drain hole which definately goes through the cases next to bolts 2 & 3. If you have coolant dripping from only these bolts then it's coming through the hole most likely from the head gasket or one of the hose connections. Try re-torqueing the head.

I had a very similiar problem with a after market head gasket which did not seal and pressurised the coolant system giving the effect that coolant was leaking out of the base of the cylinders. I tried everthing but in the end replaced it with a genuine head gasket and problem rectified. Good look with your fix.

Hi lads hopefully sorted leak thanks to your help. I am a bit of a plonker here but there was a hose clip missing from where it connects to cylinder head you could see coolant on it have put new clip on. I didnt realise there was a drain hole between the bolts in question, I do now thanks to the pics. As soon as I pulled hose off to fit clip, coolant poured out straight down said hole and covering them bolts. Aaaaaaah I thought. Cheers again lads. Will run up at weekend to test.
