hi im new on here but ive just put together a 85 ypvs which i bought in bits and struggled to get it to spark as 347 butchers have bin at it before me it seems .i took flywheel off and cleaned stator up and messed with the wiring and have managed a spark !! it now kicks up but wont rev at all so ive had carbs to bits and made sure everything is ok there then noticed the rev counter is all over the place so im thinking electrical gremlins but dont know where to go first ?? stator, cdi or coil anyone had similar or knows something i should know cheers guys

Could be many things unfortunately First off I'd check that its charging at @ 13V when at tick over, cos if thats out then you can fry the CDi . Make sure you have a decent ground connection - earth wire bolts to frame at coil, check all fuses and holders are good then all connector blocks are good too. There are only a few checks that you can do without substituting in known good parts to find the cause. Is the battery good - the tacho shouldn't be all over the place. Carbs, really need to check float height's and that all the jets and passages are thoroughly cleaned out and allow fuel to flow.

ive cleaned carbs and checked float hights mate ,its a new battery most of the connectors have been snapped off by some butcher before so ive put proper connector bullets on ? tacho is readind around 3000 rpm on tickover checked the earth by the coil ? only thing i can think of is a new earth from battery to frame or its got faulty cdi or something ??

I hope your going to find something soon! Ive just had same problem yesterday it starts and ticks over but will not rev at all, lifted one slide at a time restricted air flow to carbs, As its been built from bits I'm wondering where to start, One thing i did notice is that the powervalves where cycling, rotating back and forward at odd times when revs hadnt changed, no tacho fitted so dont know the revs.
