3 years ago I bought a rolling chassis and 5 large boxes of bits, reputed to be a 350 4L0 of 1980 vintage. having finally finished my Aircooled 250E........ (I only ever bought the aircooled cos I didnt think Id ever be able to afford a 4L0) it was time to dig it all out the shed and start... Frame has been stripped and sent for blasting The engine came in 3 of the boxes - complerely stripped and nothing labelled. the crank was still in the wrapper from being rebuilt, the top-end is reputed to be Bob Farnham tuned - again it was still in wrapping, unused. The cases were really dirty and crusty, so were sent away to be vapour-blasted. I have stripped the gearbox apart, cleaned everything and re-assembled it, and now am waititng for Norbo, to deliver a new set of case-bolts, so I can bolt it up finally now I have started to find out what Im missing..... I have no Oil-pump, and I dont have a nut for the clutch-hub - anyone got these they might like to part with?? should get the frame back this week, so will post some pictures of the rolling chassis when I get that far. The current plan is to get it running on the suspension I have, with a view to swapping this for 3-spokes and USD's, along with a different swing-arm eventually. so.. off back to the garage.......

Welcome along, not too far from you in Cumbernauld. For the clutch nut you could try your local yam dealer, amazing what is still available. Usually use Jim Allan in Falkirk, very helpful.
Good luck with the build, keep the pics coming.
Steve.

ok some progress... got the wheels blasted and powdercoated.. took a while masking off the disc centres and painting them - need a couple of dust=seals and the front-end is done - going to fit the Tokico 6-pots I have that I took off my ZRX12 as they are spare, and I have new pads for them. managed to fit the rear wheel into the LC arm with nly a little brute-force and plenty of ignorance - needs some more bending to aline things a bit neater - the caliper carrier is stopping the wheel going completely forward in the slot - will machine a bit off either it or the swingarm to fix this. the sprocket-bolts hit the swingarm - as I need to get it all in so i can see if I need to machine anything off the sprocket carrier to move the chain-run in - Ive not worried about this yet. I need to get it and the engine in the frame before I can make any assumptions about the chain-run. started sticking things on the frame to see what I did and didnt have its getting there quicker than I thought it would - there is a LONG way to go yet however. Alex

paint is going to be standard with the red stripes
(the colour it was when it was new)
going for standard bodywork, with a pro-am belly-pan
currently deliberating over the standard fzr 3tj 4-pots or getting adapters and fitting the tokico 6-pots I took off my zrx when I fitted a zx636 usd front-end - NK want £90 for the adaptors (gulp), but I would need new pads for the fzr calipers, and the ones in the 6-pots have about 100 miles on them, so that takes £40-odd quid off the bill instantly. need to sell more of the standard stuff I have, to fund all of this.....

Alex A lot of sbikes use countersunk sprocket bolts ( ebay under a tenner) so could just get the sprocket holes countersunk Steve

not a lot of progress - had to tax 2 cars, and insure the ZRX this month, so been looking for things that are cheap to do. decided to start preping the bodywork as rubbing down doesnt cost any money. panels are ok:- tank has had a hard life though - was completely covered in about 2mm of filler - dont think the guy who did it had a good eye for shape - this is all that was needed... and the other side... which will get finished tonight. hopefully I still have some etch primer floating about that I can slap on then progress to a nice thick layer of hi-build primer and get the finish right. need to buy a mudguard

progress at last... some forward, some back... got the engine completed finally the reed-spacers make it a tight squeeze for the carb-airbox rubbers!! Rear wheel is now able to be bolted up tight - I still want to machine about 3mm off the brake carrier to shift the wheel over to the right a bit more - I can space it centrally from there. rear brake master-cylinder is now connected to the brake-pedal! Wiring-loom is all present and correct - battery going in next week to see if everything powers up and works ok. Triumph TT600 4-pot brakes fitted and once the correct wheel with the correct disc-spacing arrives, they look like they will be perfect - they bolted straight one and were a bargain! the step-back comes from finding out I do have the wrong front-wheel - the disc-facing to disc-facing dimension of the wheel I have is 118mm, and I need a 115mm one, so I have purchased another wheel and am waiting for it to arrive. I will try and get more pictures this week.

more progress - off to buy some white paint tomorrow.... now on the 3rd front-wheel - got the correct fzr400 3tj one on its way (trust me to pick the only FZR front-end with an odd front-wheel!) Wiring all plugged in and all lights and switches work as they should - have broken the Main/Dip switch through being ham-fisted with it though - hopefully I can source the bit I broke so I dont have to strip and clean and paint another cluster. front brake on and bled up - need more bleeding, but they work.... Handlebars now sorted - clip-ons with a 2 " raise on their way hopefully will get it running over the Christmas holiday... meant to add - I think the tailpiece is too high, so it will be coming half-way back to standard from where it currently is.

just waiting for it to cool down for a first returque of the headbolts (this will hopefully sort the cooland dribbling out of the head-gasket)

please excuse the camp-pose!!
I have however found the water-pump isnt going round - if you push the impeller in , it locates onto the pin, so it looks like Ive not put the circlip on, or its fallen off, so tomorrow I'll be popping off the clutch cover for a wee look.
but it runs! and its so much more mechanically quiet than the aircooled I used to have - the allspeeds definitely need re-packed though - tis a wee bit loud!!!
plus... dropped in on the painter and hes done the base - Im to put the transfers on Monday night and I'll get it all back Tuesday!
loadsa progress this week.
