This post has got me thinking. I was a bit of a dick when I bought my engine a couple of years ago that I'm using for my project. It has been restamped with 4L0 numbers, it has 1UA cylinders and 31K heads; how do I know the engine came from an F2? Any suggestions?
Sorry to hijack the post Nikfubar!

Certainly wasn't me, you can get a complete bottom end for that money.
Didn't unstamped cases at least come with the pre fix on them?
Also don't like the way they are listed as N2 cases to make them seem rarer but later says F2.
Steve.

Didn't unstamped cases at least come with the pre fix on them? No, completely unstamped due to more than one prefix used for the same case type. Should still have the secruity ribbing though.

I think you are lucky to find an unmollested engine these days On my last build the engine had no numbers fitted to an F2 with 31K barrels & head. I have been lucky this time got a frame & engine off a forum member with matching numbers & you could tell the engines never been apart before ;D

My bikes cases have just 29L stamped on them with the security ribbing intact That's why I assumed the prefix was on them as had seen this before but must just be the 29L ones. Steve.

Difficult to tell, if it has the tacho drive blank then likely to be F2 as unlikely to be removed, more commonly fitted to put in Lc2. Check the stator and flywheel as were different dependant on model but easily changed. All 1UA's heads were marked 31k, it's the Y1,2 or 3 that makes the difference, Y3 latest and highest compression. What the cases were originally not really important as all the same. Personally I'd rather remove the numbers and have blank cases than an engine that is obviously marked as what it is not, may cause probs with plod at later date. Steve.

Oh, I stand corrected then in that case. I was going by my 4L0/1 cases, a yamaha replacement set with no numbers stamped. It makes sense to me to have no prefix stampings due to the various prefixes used. In the 4L series you could have 4L0, 4L1, 4L3, 4U0, 5E0 etc, etc.

Thanks for the advice chaps, I can sleep soundly now. Started having a panic attack that the engine I had bought was a lash up of left over RD bits.

I was going by my 4L0/1 cases, a yamaha replacement set with no numbers stamped. Think you are right, not seen any YPVS cases with 31k or 1UA only just the 29L ones. May be that the 29L was jap market only, think I read that they don't have engine numbers so would explain them only having 29L on them It makes sense to me to have no prefix stampings due to the various prefixes used.
