About to clean up my oil and header tanks on my LC and the header isnt too bad with only a little rust in the bottom which is mostly cleaned out, but the oil tank is stained red...
Looking thru some old threads I see some have used all sorts of things... dishwasher, loo cleaner and vinegar, but whats the best? I dont want to ruin the tanks :/
Im thinking the vinegar will make easy work of the rusty residue in the header tank, but the red oil worried me and i thought loo cleaner as it would bleach it, but i didnt want it to go white or anything as some loo cleaner is very strong... Also will putting these in the dishwasher ruin them due to the heat?

Use thinners with a rough ish cloth, take it back to brand new... Bleach is a good idea aswell.

Cool thanks guys, i was less keen to use thinners as i worried it would met the plastic, but maybe its stronger than i thought as its probably a fuel grade plastic etc.
Will try bleach and the dishwasher... spose i should whack the loom and the some of the other plastic parts in there at the same time, the inner mudguard wont warp will it?

I wouldn't put the loom in the dish washer, immersing copper cables in a salt solution, not good. After I put my crank cases barrels etc in the dish washer the ali started to corrode due to the salt had to spray it all down with WD40 & the missus was not to pleased with the state I left the dish washer in

LOL, I did wonder about the loom as my worry was that the salt would penetrate the plastic of the wires, but i know people have done it. Ok will do plastic parts only, i dont fancy white fluffy alloy parts...

LOL! Ok here is a pic of my 'before shot' of my tanks... Ive cleaned them in the parts washer (runs dishwasher powder but was very old water so dirty), then left em in bleach water solution overnight (more like 24hrs) and then twice thru the dishwasher (with tablets) and... they look much the same...grr... it was the red stain in the oil tank that i was wanting to remove so its a bummer its still there, I'll have another go with some hotter water, washing up water and bleach and see how i go... but...

you could try using traffic film remover neat, your local hand carwash use it to burn the crap out of the paintwork on cars, its a mild acid come detergent
