i bought this bike off little bloke a back in 2020 rode a round for a bit and then it was starting to need some little jobs doing so i decided to do a refresh which i turn out to be a lot more work needed. due to being parked up for too long and the fact the coolant had gone off and its made a bit of a mess. when i first got it Ns400r rebuild by Maxwell Black, on Flickr

I think the NS400R is a very pretty bike. Never owned one & nearly bought one once but went RD500 instead.
The off beat exhaust note takes some getting used to, but the colours are so iconic HRC you gotta love the look.
Details you're going to tell me it'll be a looker!
Great pics & keep them coming.

some of you may already know this wheel conversion i bought a vf1000r rear wheel just for the rim making a massive 17x 3.5 to fit a 130 tire which is much better than what on there 17x 2.75 110 tire. then swap the old rear rim plus some new spokes to the front hub which was a 16" wheel making it 100 80 17 i could had fitted cbr wheels and gone 120 front 140 rear but i wanted the standard ish look. i also have disabled the antidive by fitting a longer bolt with washer stops the lever from being pressed. some people may have their concerns i can always try with and with out. Untitled by Maxwell Black, on Flickr Untitled by Maxwell Black, on Flickr

Brilliant wheel conversion, best of both worlds with same looks but better tyre sizes

So does that mean the uk ns had more or less power than the jap version?

So does that mean the uk ns had more or less power than the jap version? I'd be happy to bet the UK had more based on their 250's being restricted to 45hp when ours got 60.

That paint scheme really makes the bike. I'd love to restore one, just to paint it like that.
I've always been put off Honda resto's due to being bitten by their parts prices, that's if you can even get them.
Does everyone running aftermarket pipes junk the ATAC that wasn't much cop and only on two pots?

So does that mean the uk ns had more or less power than the jap version? yes the jap ones have less power you have to knock out the sleeves in the attacs they uk models only make 60 bhp at the crank anyway

JL i meant to be the best for them unless you are tracking it.

Fantastic build and thread, look forward to seeing the end result. I owned 2 NS400s during the 80s and early 90s, along with an RG500. Couple of years back I got to ride Kopite30s NS400 back to back with my own RD500 and shortly after that a RG500, the NS felt far and away a better bike to ride than either of the 500s. The handling still had a modern day feel to it,its made of far higher quality and beautiful components, IMHO in every measurable way its a better bike . Parts availability back in 1987 was an issue then..must be much harder now. It was no quicker than my friends F2 YPVS but for a classic bike, it doesn't really matter , its not 1985 when the performance difference really was a purchasing factor, my old HRC model is still out there, I have tried many times via social media to find the owner but i think its sitting in a collection tucked away.
