After removing my engine and finally revealing why my tacho has never worked ( apart from the obvious ie not having a cable) I ve decided to get the answers I need from those that know . My tacho drive port is plugged , so am assuming my engine is an f1/n1 version . I have a tacho drive shaft and the respective bits ( apart from plastic drive pinion , fingers crossed on that one ). My question is , if I was to fit the complete tacho assembly is there still a tacho drive gear in the gearbox to drive the plastic pinion and is there likely to be a bearing/bush in what appears to be the shaft supporting spigot. ( I ve marked that in red in from manual pic ).

you will need to check the bearing on the casting as you've highligthed, they can be missing, also check you have the two 5mm threaded holes to hold the retainer plate, some aren't drilled and some are just clearance holes
The plastic tacho drive gear is driven by the idler gear, which will be fitted if you have a kick starter, which I assume you have, in which case you are good to go

I may be wrong but I have it in my head that the later casings that never had the tacho drive do not have a bush in the case for the shaft but the hole is the correct size
Wouldn't worry about no bush ad no real load and when you think about it the water pump shaft runs in the bare alloy case

It might be easier to put an electronic tacho in the cluster.
You could be possible switch the tacho face / needle to something that would look match LC clocks. Temp gauge etc.
Or just go for the modded look. Later F1/N1 onwards, there have also been stack, koso, SPA etc etc clocks stuffed into LC clock cases.

Just got my cases out and slipped the tacho long shaft in and it is tight and has no bushes. Were they in the aircooled cases ?

Thanks chaps for all the info .Well it looks like it could vary from model to model ! . Kick start all present and correct so good news I should have drive to my current non existing plastic pinion. The retaining plate holes are there and tapped so thatโs good ๐ will check tomorrow to see if I can see a bush in the first hole .
Thanks again for your time chaps much appreciated ๐

Just an update . Have checked for bush in engine housing and mine is Bushless . The shaft end fits in nice and snug so hopefully the same will apply when engine casings are split and the shaft is offered into the small spigot. Retaining holes are drilled and also tapped .
