Nice looking car. The Mrs and I had a lift from a friend to a night out a couple of weekends ago. The car we were in was an MG. I mentioned giving him some petrol money and he then told me it was all electric. I obviously couldn't tell. He works about 15 miles away and said he charges it up once a week. He said the best thing about it is the acceleration.

Usually they arent a great steer tho and lack something (I was going to say 'spark', but, well..) when driving, but they are quick in a straight line. Im sure that's not all that I want from a car, but none of us turns away a fast 0-60...

When i hear MG and ev i think of the guy near midlife who's car wouldn’t stop recently the police had to let him crash into them to slow him down so he could jump out

Nice looking car 😎
I jumped into the EV world a couple of months ago and yes the acceleration is great but it's more the instant response that takes you back
40mph dual carriageway ends and you sink the foot, head whacks of headrest
Back off at 80, plant foot again, whacks head off headrest again
Nice to pootle about in, smooth and quiet but I wouldn't want to through it about too much as it weighs 1.7 ton 😕
You can feel the weight over bumps, a bit like when your boot is full
Great economy when charged at home on a night EV rate but public chargers are around 65p per kW in stead of 9.5p at home
The range is another thing. The Kia blurb says up to 280 miles, the online reviews say 230 - 240 which was enough for my 200 mile weekend jaunts
In reality with 3 adults in it, motorway and 5 degrees outside it won't do 200 so I have to stick 10kw in it to get back home
It appears that 3 ish miles per kW is the normal for most EV's, they don't tell that in the blurb
Anyway, nice pics Jon, you'd think a test driver could park better 🤣

I'll get my coat. My brother in law has a MB EV but only to avoid company car tax. He does talk about range anxiety from getting into the car, not ideal. He works in the oil industry and all the oil reps have EV's

Anyway, nice pics Jon, you'd think a test driver could park better 🤣 Steve Haha, thats what I thought as well! To be fair I think they were lost. The lady who saw me taking the photos didnt look best pleased. I think they had decided to do the city stuff on a rainy day (yeah it happens!) to avoid photos and then got lost and were trying to work stuff out on the side of the road in a quick pit stop etc. She gave me a perturbed eye roll as I went past her lol

The stupid things that excite EV drivers
I had been told things may improve as the battery is cycled. Its been charged/discharged 5 times now
Just drove 15 miles mostly motorway, last 3 miles through city
Managed 3.8 m/kW 🤣
Feel like I should be in a group on the dark Web instead of here 🥸

That thing is as close to an MG as my Yaris is. A bloody insult to the name. Chinese craporama that they slap an MG badge on and sell it here for about 4 times what it costs in China. A bloke near me has one. Petrol. Pile of shite with drum brakes on the rear. Been towed away twice as it failed to start. If they called it the Yangtze Incident then fair enough. It ain't an MG in any sense of the word.
Rant over.

Well that escalated quickly. :/
I wasnt posting this as any pro/neg EV car thing, just that its cool to see a car being tested on normal roads and how the badges are blanked out... why? and the legal text in the window and the stickers all over with VIN and other stuff etc. All very strange to the normal eye.
...plus it was a scoop as it was their first day etc. What chance do any of us have to see that I wonder. I used to see Bently/Rolls testing on my work route when in the uk, but never like this.
Anyway. Nice to be one of the first to see a fast 2 seater in its natural environment so thought id share is how i came at this.

Not having a go Jon! I just despise what they've done to a classic marque like MG. Shocking. Even more so if it's electric...

Without taking this thread even further into anti-EV territory as thats not at all what i intended... The fact this is (and many others are) electric is because everything is heading that way due to greenwashing policies - we all understand the issues of how that works (or not?!) better now, but its a fact that the policies are still in place with a mandate to move to electric propulsion and politicians pat themselves on the back for their good work, even the greens I guess. How we mine the battery minerals, how we generate the power, how we account for building new vehicles and the scrap of the old and how we end of life the new harder to recycle technologies are obviously questions politicians never bothered to worry themselves with when ticking a 'we did something for the environment' box. At least there has finally been a backlash this year as petrol and diesel are reasserting their place as motive power sources, lets hope that sense prevails. Electric has its place, but the others are not actually dead ends.
Anyway, look on the bright side. At least this MG is a 2 seater sports car, the 'new MG' company was all about small SUVs so this is more MG than all the rest and bound to be a loss leader, its just a 'hero car' for the brand... tho its worth remembering that the old MG did make all sorts of normal saloon cars as well back in the day if you look at the range. It wasnt all just 2 seater 'letter cars'.
FWIW I remember when the MGF came out (I had an evaluation car before the launch for a day/night, long story short; it was great fun!), that all the MG buffs complained it 'wasnt a REAL MG...', sigh... Yep, it drove too well and was reliable lol. Its a classic now of course and accepted.
Same happened with the TR7, yep it went the exact same way... No matter that it was the best driving of all the TRs, but hated mostly cos it 'wasnt a real Triumph as it didnt have a seperate chassis...' Er, wow, looking back at that you dont have to wonder what killed Triumph, a brand who was heralded as one who innovated (TR4 with disk brakes etc), yet ended up with stuck in the mud owners 20years later who wanted cart horse technology... none of whom ever bought one new at that time i bet, just grumbled... Didnt help that politicians (in the USA) saddled the car with big bumpers high up (same as MGB of course) and an old weezy engine instead of the V8 (which it got too late). It was also compromised by being terribly built by workers who didnt want to be there and deliberately ruined the product and helped killed the brand along the way, way to go to keep your 'jobs for life' guys... Anyway, Im digressing...
So... Ive said this before, but I call this hate of the new, 'The Subaru WRX approach'. This is where all the older model owners hate the new model with a passion, right up until the next new one comes out. The outgoing model is then included in the range of 'great cars we'd all own, 110%!' and the new model is ugly/crap/cheaply made/etc in every way. A few years later, rinse and repeat... Bike guys do this less than car guys usually, the new model of anything is usually seen as better than the old.
Flat out Im not saying this new MG is going to be loved like any of the old ones, it is too soon for that... but it is what it is and we are in 2024 not 1964 etc. Governments mandating electric vehicles (who let them decide on the power source?!) means manufacturers will make cars with leccy motors in em as they need to build product that is allowed to be sold. Certainly from abroad there is zero sense fighting the policies of governments of other countries, thats how you go out of biz etc.
EDITED to add: FWIW the new MG company didnt make any effort to upset people by trying to talk up MG's history with these new cars by including 'heritage' links other than the MG octagonal badge. MAybe they should have? If they had included historic touches from the older models like Nissan did with the 400Z would people have wanted this new MG sports car any more or just complained it was 'pretending to be an MG'? Maybe this proves you cant win em all... What if they werent MG at all? Ie they were marketed as a new model under someone new or even 'someone less known but upcoming to your part of the world', someone like BYD for example, ie someone that people generally dont know much about. Would we have less vitriol? Food for thought...
Anyway... I repeat, I posted this cos I thought it was a cool thing to see local to me and as its not an everyday sight for most of us to see a car few have seen on your local roads... it could have been any type or brand of car at all as it was a random spot of something 'on the street'... plus I expected we'd like pics of a 2 seater sports car that does 0-60 in 3.2secs and to me has some cool looks, unlike most cars, ie SUVs etc.

Totally understand both where the company is coming from, they bought the rights to the marque after the Johnny Towers debacle ( I know all about him from a professional basis when I was regional CID). They’ve invested heavily and use the marque for cache and kudos. However from a driving perspective‘British’ sports cars were all about lightweight and nimble handling, being an ev this won’t be the case with this irrespective of its ability, more posing/cruising than canyon bashing. The Mgf was a decent ish car for the day bar the K series head problems. Do they have appeal today? Not sure they do I think they are of the time look dated and weren’t that well built. Imo if you want to buy the best British sports car of the past 30 years there is only one choice. That’s an Mx5 probably the closest anyone has come to the ideal of small lightweight good handling sports car.

I agree with everything you chaps have said. British Leyland killed Triumph...and every other car marque too. I realise that MG did make some saloon cars but they were famed for 2 seater sports models. The MGF should have been a winner but like Tim mentions, the magical stretchy head bolts killed it off. As for EVs...well, governments have to be seen to be doing something green. Even though motor vehicles only produce 7% of greenhouse gas. When Hydrogen becomes an economic reality...I'll be a happy bunny.

When John Bloor decided to start making motorcycles in the 90's he could have stuck 'Bloor" on the tank but decided it was better to pay a few quid and buy the name 'Triumph' instead. That's all it is, they buy a name that people know and stick it on the back of a car or a motorcycle tank. AJS, Norton, Triumph, Bugatti, MG. No connection with the company that made the name famous in the first place just a commercial short cut. Better to be able to tell your neighbours you just bought an MG than you just bought a Shing-Ying-Ting-Tong.

That is a seriously good looking sports car. Obviously many styling cues taken from the likes of the Elan/MGF/MX5/S2000/F Type etc., but I think it is visually an absolute little stunner.
It'll be darn sprightly too, even with the lower power option installed, and with Steve MLC's estimate of a realistic 3 miles/Kwh. a range of 200 miles, it all adds up to looking like a usable thing.
At $120,000 AUS (around £62,000 GBP) it's a lot of wonga mind, oh and these days, even if I could physically manage to contort my old bones to get into one, getting out might be a bit challenging......
