Hi I’ve recently bought a R1-Z 250. It has 6gear box yet will not shift into 6th gear while riding it.. however I can shift into 6th by rocking bike backwards and forwards when bike not running and not pulling in clutch. Any body know what the problem is? Thanks steve

Usually that would be a bent or worn selector fork. If it won’t stay in gear it’s normally the dogs. There’s an outside chance it’s just out of adjustment on the gear change pawl, but you’d sort of expect that to show up on all gears, but might just be that 6th needs the selector drum pulled round just that fraction more. Do upshifts feel like they have less available travel than the downshifts?

Hi Thanks for reply. Yes there’s less travel on the upshift than downshift. Also the lever on the gearshift rod is more in line with 1st than neutral on the scale on engine cover it’s as if something isn’t lined up proper?? The bike had been stood for 2-3 years when i bought it and had dry seized. I’ve rebuilt the top end and the carbs and the motor runs spot on. There is however a bit of clutch drag but I’ve not pulled the cover off yet to see what’s going there it could be worn or plates sticking. I thought I would ask advice on the 6th gear problem first. Regards steve

Have you got any 'slop' in the gearchange knuckles at all? I also like to try and set the selector to be 90degs so you get as much travel as possible if that makes sense? Ie not twisted round on the splines etc. Had a similar problem on an RGV, just reset the linkage, and all was good.

Regards steve Ok, that sounds hopeful… basically if the pawl isn’t adjusted for mid point then you can end up struggling to pull the selector drum over enough for it to engage. Its a side cover off job and hopefully just adjustment … so not as bad as an engine split and new internals needed. if pawl adjustment means nothing to you and a quick search leaves you still baffled we can go further.

I also think it'll be pawl adjustment, but if you end up needing a shift fork pm me I think I've got decent number 1 & 2 forks - I had to buy a set to get a good replacement number 3 for mine.
