Is it normal to struggle selecting all gears when you’ve rebuilt an engine and you’ve got it on the bench without the barrels on and no oil in it? I seem to be able to select first 3 gears then struggling. From recollection this is normal?

A lot easier if you turn the gearbox sprocket while trying to change the gears
A bit like trying to change up through the gears when the bike isn't moving

Yes doing that as I select gears but I think once you get near the top gears the sprocket has to be spun quite quickly. Managed to select 5 gears but can’t get 6th.

I had similar on one of my builds and I thought it would improve once the engine was running, but it didn't. Check the bearing on the gear selector, the skinny one on the clutch side. Mine was too tight, I thought it was a genuine one but wasn't. I had to take engine out again and strip all for the sake of a £14 bearing. Once replaced, gear selection was very smooth.

If you have had selector drum out you might have put it back together wrong ive build loads of lc and ypvs engins up but got one wrong the other week remove clutch drum and then you csn see the selector drum star is selecting all the gears if not youll have to split it. If you have to do this make sure its in neutral when you rebuild it Hope this helps Adie
